Foal ear torn off

Foal owner has updated the post in the Vet forum...............Door only had chain across it, so dog could go in and out as it pleased.

I I said earlier, I just hope both owners learn from the pain that was inflicted on both animals, by their careless actions.

I brought up Norwegian Buhunds and Dalmatians as an example PrincessSpark1e, since I felt that Over2You was talking about ALL dogs regardless of breed.
I can understand if somebody that feel they have problems with dogs running loose might react stronger but I didn't agree about the statement [ QUOTE ]
When are people going to realize that dogs and horses do NOT mix!

If you can't exercise your dog properly you still shouldn't just let it out on it's own during the day, but it's not the dogs fault what the owner does.
Most dogs also doesn't always choose fight to get out of a situation, but as you later say PrincessSpark1e, in a small confined area without a feeling of that they have a clear way to escape, then most dogs might try to fight their way out of the situation.

I agree PiebaldEaster it was careless actions from the owner of both dog and horses, have a dog, know it likes to be with the horses and only have a chain across the opening as door. They must have understood it meant the dog or a child could get in.
However I don't want to shoot down the owners just because I think they where careless and the ones to blame. Most of us do happen to do stupid things during our lives, I know I have and probably, although sadly and regrettable, will do in the future. It is just sad that it ended the way it did.

But I still don't think all dogs deserves to labeled as unpredictable and incapable of being around horses. Just as I don't think all horses are unpredictable and incapable of being around humans after a few death accidents involving horses and humans.

A dalmation escorting a carriage is far different to a dog (of any breed) being left alone with a foal.
Nobody knows the full story, I suppose a lesson has been learnt by the foals owner.

Ooops, posted at the same time!

I quite agree with Over2you. Horses and dogs should be kept away from each other. I have seen many accidents where foals and horses have been bitten by dogs. The horse can't help it - but the dog is a meat eater and you should protect your horse from such a predator. I think it is quite right that the dog was put down. The foal has a hole in its head, quite terrible!

I'm asking for trouble then hacking out with my dogs? They might savage my horse?
Its a silly over generalisation saying horses and dogs must be kept apart, although it doesn't seem logical to keep a foal in a stable with just a chain ove rthe door.

Personally I think this is far too much of an over-generalisation - you cannot possibly say that ALL dogs are dangerous with horses, some get on fine and others dont

As far as I am concerned the bloody stupid owners of the foal should be put down for allowing the dog into the stable with the foal. It is always the same with dog attacks.... mass hysteria and demands for the dog to be PTS, no-one ever questions the idiot owner who let the dog be in that situation originally, it makes me really angry

I'd love to know how they managed with a chain across the door. I have a stall chain on mine, and tried to muck out with the door open but the stall chain on, it kept the mare in but Finn stuck his head under it and b*ggered off up the barn!!!

I'd NEVER leave a foal unattended with only a stall chain across. If I'm not there mucking out at the time etc. the bottom door is shut - I don't want anything getting in with him.

Numpties.

I'd echo the poor foal and poor dog
