He arrived at 9 pm on Sunday evening, and he's about as enormous as we thought from the size of mum's tum! I had popped out for an hour, and of course, all our CCTV kit and alarms went to waste - she had him by the time I came back, and there he was, standing up and surveying his world! Beth was very, very unsettled and upset - didn't know whether to squeal at him for invading her space, or defend him against all comers .... we had a very traumatic night, which I couldn't have survived without wonderful helpers, as Beth refused to let the foal feed, and we eventually had the vet, who sedated her and we drew off some colostrum to feed to the baby. I still have a very sore right arm where Beth towed me round the stable! But after all the trauma, baby is now feeding really well, Beth has chilled out, and is promising to be the most protective mum ever! ("No, you are NOT to go and speak to that other horse/person/dog ....") No parties for him, poor chap.
He's a lovely boy, we are very proud of him - looks like he might become grey eventually like his mum. And he's here safe and sound (eventually!) [img]http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks everyone, its so great to be able to share the good experiences (and the bad when they happen) with you all!

Ideas for stable names gratefully received - we did think of Cosmo, but I'm going off it ... and my daughter wants to call him Moose ('cos she very rudely said that he looks like one) Hmmm ....

Also show name - dam Ballykett Blue Diamond, sire Caretino Glory .... Jane, my wonderful overnight helper has come up with some great combinations, including Caretino's Midnight Mayhem (gives you an idea of what we went through!!), Caretinos Blue Diamond; Caretinos Gem; I quite like The Cullinan Diamond ('cos it was the biggest ever found!) ... what does everyone think?

Love the name Caretino's Midnight Mayhem !!!

As for Stable name as he was born at night wot about something like 'Luna' (as in moon) or names that relate to nothing particular like: Sabastian, Gulliver or Leo (my friend has always wanted a horse called Dave or Brian!)

Congratulations

Congratulations! Well worth the wait even if you did miss it!

Looks a lovely strong foal, very swish!

Just watch the Moose name will stick - Joey is called Joey cos he was just like a kangaroo when I took the bag off his head - and nothing else 'took' after a comment like that!

What a super, strong looking chap he is.
Was Beth a maiden then? I had a maiden once that foaled down unexpectedly in the field, took one horrified look at her offspring and hightailed it out of there, took us hours to catch her in a pitch dark field.

I am very pleased to hear that things are well with them now, it's so worrying when the mare isn't happy about feeding. Hopefully she will allow him a little more freedom after a few days.
