My 6 month old weanling filly who has until now always been sensible in the field, apparently had a bit of a mad moment today and slipped over and fell, she has no swelling or cuts just two scuffs one on her knee and one on her shoulder and seems to be a bit stiff on same shoulder. I have bought her in cold hosed her and put ice gel on shoulder and knees. She seems comfortable enough and i can press shoulder and pick up leg without any problems. Should I be worried? Or am i fussing too much? Any suggestions what else I can do to aid stiffness?

I fell over loads as a kid, I guess it's the same for foals. If it isn't broken it's likely to be a bit of bruising.

Thats what I was thinking but Ive only ever had horses from 4 year old up and she is my first weanling; hence why I m fussing like an old woman! She just looks so delicate and fragile!

They are usually tougher than they look, most foals will fall over fooling around at some point, they learn from it and hopefully by the time they are ridden they can control their legs properly!!

She will probably be best turned out as much as possible, this will stop her stiffening up and also less chance of further injury when she does get back out.

It's pouring down here atm and really windy, think we are having tail end of storm so I think I will leave her in , shes currently sleeping in the straw!

My homebred filly spent more of her first two years upside down/flat on her side/on her face/stuck in a fence than upright (to the degree that I had her to a big equine clinic to check for wobblers). I jokingly had a headcollar embroidered upside down as I said that way we can read her name when she goes down .... The good news she didn't ever really hurt herself - scrapes and bruises (she managed to injured in other ways but not falling over!). After her 2nd birthday she stopped her tumbles and finally mastered the art of going fast around corners, down hills, bucking AND galloping/etc ... In fat, she's now growing into a smart little mare as a 3.5yo lol.

Thats refreshing to hear Be Positive, and I hope she can control her legs by then! Ohh dear MissTyc I would be a nervous wreck with a filly like that! Glad she never injured herself! I really am a fuss pot! I'm glad everything turned out okay with her :) thank you all for your help!

My youngest is currently 2.5 and still can't seem to control his legs properly when going downhill - he is always face planting himself (ususally into mud) all of the others have been the same - they do grow out of it :)

Ohh god! Expensive as well! Hope everything is okay with her MissTyc! Does not sound like a nice position to be in! At least her balance , brakes and cornering are improving with age!

Oh dear, you have made me feel like a careless owner! I bought a 41/2 month old miniature and she would have a mad half hour everyday whereby she would gallop around and always ended up flat out on the floor. She would leap up and start all over again. She is two now and the most sure footed horse I have ever come across. I always assumed just like toddlers they have to learn where to put their feet and if that means taking a few tumbles so be it. She still gallops round the field but she no longer falls over.:biggrin3:

Crugeran Celt please dont feel that way! I am just the most fussy OCD owner going! I mad for making sure everything is spotless that they have a clean headcollar every week and disinfect the stables every Saturday ... they're like my children, honestly the kind of person u would like to slap for being silly haha! drives my partner mad! I wouldnt have been too worried had she not come to the gate and stood there looking sorry for herself then hobbled away ... (think she is a spoilt princess, and its all down to me babying her! ) I think your all right I need to leave her be a horse , find her feet have a few cuts and bruises and just have a chamomile tea and chill out!

It's ok I am a bit like that about my cob. He fell last week whilst galloping around with the minis and the noise as he hit the floor I thought he had broken his neck. I was in a right panic. It doesn't seem so bad when the minis do it but I hate seeing my big horses skidding around the field. He is 11 but still hasn't got the sure footness of the two year old mini!

An 18 month old filly was turned out with mine and others, on wet, rather grassless and quite muddy conditions and the dratted thing was quite literally doing cartwheels around the field. I lost count of how many times it hit the deck. Didn't seem to hurt itself though. Like us, they bounce better than us old fogies!

when my boy was about 9 or 10 months old he was still with his mum and quite cheeky. He'd just run up to me in the field and tried to bite me and so I chased him away; so he ran up to his dam and tried to bite her, and she chased him away too. Being a drama diva, he ran away - smack into the wire fence, did a back flip over it and landed (on his back) in the neighbour's garden. He jumped up straight away, looking a bit confused! I then had to figure out how to get him out of the garden (without causing more damage) and down the stretch of road to the gate back into the field. Stoooopid pony!!
