Hi Everyone...

In a few weeks time I have my new foal coming home. She has lived out since being born and has been bought in recently to be weaned and handled etc and she is arriving to me in a few weeks.

I am however in need of some advice!! I need to purchase some rugs for her and was wondering if it would be an issue if I bought her rugs that were a few sizes bigger than what she needed to allow for growth for a while? Also I have been told so many different things by stud farms and nutritionists on what to feed her but would like some advice on that too??

Any help please?? :)

Why rugs, are you clipping her? :)

No not clipping her but have been told to get her used to rugs now rather than later, also she isn't very fluffy at all. And they have been bought in due to the harsh weather. In a predicament!!

I don't think you need to start rugging her just to get her used to rugs.

However, if when she arrives you feel she is struggling with adverse weather (and this would normally be wind and rain) then by all means rug her.

But, do buy rugs to fit (so inexpensive ones, as you'll be replacing every few months).

As for feed, access to good grazing and adlib hay (or haylage) and think about something like D&D Suregrow.

What breed is she?

I rug my foals, largely because mine are in a lot in the winter and stood about in their boxes tend to get a bit chilly. I also think it helps keep condition on so you get the max out of their growth. My opinion, I know others will have theirs. I would make sure you buy ones that "almost" fit, or you run the risk of it slipping and legs getting caught etc - you dont want to frighten him/her. You can pick up little rugs eaily second hand and sell them on again.
