I have to say, I am pretty pleased with his progress. He has been an absolutely model patient. He just stands there to have his injections and doesn't flinch or mess about when I am changing his dressing. I cannot fault him at all - he has been perfect.

Anyway, here is the photo of his leg on Sunday.

And these ones taken a moment ago; just 2 days later. What do you all think?

After putting some povidone on.

And finally tucked up for the night.

looking much much better. swelling has gone down an amazing amount, you must be a good nurse and he's being a good patient! will keep things crossed for you both!
btw, did the foal who ate the baler twine produce it eventually?
believe it or not i was giving my youngsters hay the other morning, thinking about that happening at your place, and just as i thought "the helper must've been half sharp, i've never had one do that" one of mine grabbed a bit as i pulled it off the bale, and i had to pull it out of her mouth quickly! duh. *blushes*

Oh he really is a superb boy. He just does not bat an eyelid bless him.

LOL!! Yep. I searched that field every day and finally on the fourth day I found it.

My, what a lot of stories these foals will be able to tell their grandchildren......

The other foals are all really friendly and are coming along nicely. The little grulla, the elusive one, is elusive no longer...yaaay! He is really really cuddly; like super-cuddly! I'm very pleased with them all. None of them have dropped any weight and they are all starting to get a nice shine to their coats and looking healthy. AND they are happy now! All of them are bright and playing and having lots of fun like normal home-bred foals do; so yes I'm thrilled.

Thanks everyone - it's always nice to see what others think, but I was sure the swelling had gone down a lot. This is one of the reasons why I photograph every single injury we have here as it is so much easier than trying to remember.

It's definitely looking better - could take a while though!
Thanks for the update on the foal that swallowed the twine - I'd forgotten about that and I was interested to know how long it would take!!!

Wow, just took a peek at your previous post, and have to say that is one impressive injury!

The surrounding tissue is looking healthy though - no doubt thanks to some pretty intensive nursing from yourself and Megan.

There's no doubt that that was a life threatening injury. You should be really proud of yourselves.

Incredible, I can't believe how quickly you have got that swelling down. The wound look clean, healthy and pink (all very encouraging), looks like you and Megan have been doing a sterling job. Has the Appy got a name yet??

OOUCH --- but have to say that it looks really nice and clean and healthy. I would expect to see nice new skin forming around those edges shortly and even though you would never want it to happen in the first place you have the advantage that it's a vertical cut, so although low down should hopefully heal a bit faster. Well done you you've done a fantastic job. He must be a little star to cope with the amount of attention that that needs at the mo.

You can see far more of the tendon and big blood vessel now, which shows just how much the swelling has gone down.

Feel so sorry for the poor little love.

He is very lucky to have you guys and the care you are providing him.

God Tia, that looks awful. Sorry, I didn't read your other post, but I'm glad it is healing, hope it continues.

QR -

Thanks everyone for you kind wishes. I hope it continues to heal well too. You never can tell with injuries like this, however it is looking promising right now so I'm still positive.

His registered name is Cruisin' Actor - we call him Cruise.

You know when you have an injured horse and some of them seem to know that what you are doing for them is for their own good? Well this is this little guy. He just takes the whole lot in his stride and just stands their eating his hay while I fiddle around with him.

For a little foal who was running wild on a massive 30,000 acre ranch with his mother only a month ago to being travelled thousands of miles to end up in a tiny 10 acre field "with fencing, god forbid" which he "fell out of" within 5 minutes; quickly learned what fences were, then to being handled by humans and then to have such an injury - what can I say! I am actually in awe of him and I am very very happy that my daughter decided to keep him.

Yes I'm taking good care of him and spending a lot of time with him, but HE is the one who is keeping our spirits up - he goes around like nothing has happened and that this is all perfectly normal for a 5 month old foal. Amazing little chap.

Oh, you had me laughing, sorry,

"10 acre field "with fencing, god forbid" which he "fell out of" within 5 minutes;"

He sounds a real character, my fingers are tightly crossed for a full and uneventful recovery.

What do you call the other foals?

Ouch! But doesn't that look much better already. Lots of pink flesh which is always a good sign and the swelling is much reduced.

My Trak x Knab Filly tore open her stife this summer and I panicked and thought that was the end for her - vet said not to be so silly, that foals recover very well, and sure enough the difference is amaxing!

Hmmm can't work out how to put pics up but here's a link to 3 pics of her injury, at different stages...as you can see it's healed very well!
