As the title. My 3 week old colt is a bit of a b**ger and is giving his maiden mum the big run around. She doesn't seem able to reprimand him and he is taking advantage of this. She now has hardly any mane left so what can I do? I have already resigned myself to being the disciplinarian - but I would like my mare to have a little bit of mane left!

Where I used to work on a stud, we had to put Cribox on the tail of one yearling as another kept chewing it. That should hopefully act as a deterrent :)

Well, that's up to mum. You could try a stop bite spray. But you'd need to ensure its safe around something so young.

I use bitter apple spray to good effect to stop the youngsters in the neighbouring field pulling off my horse's fly mask in the summer (he's chestnut and his nose burns in the moonlight, so needs to keep his hat on!), this would probably work on mane and tail and a lot less gunky than cribox.

I've had the same problem here with foals off the same mare, so maybe it is genetic?

Tried to put Cribox on the mare's mane but she totally flipped and I could not get near her after that! The foal ate her mane and tail, then the stallion's tail, then another mare's mane....

AAAaaarrrggghhh!!!!!

I found moving on to new grass did help, but other than that I don't know. I'll try to get the Cribox on before she foals this time....

My last foal was the only one I have known do this. He chewed his mum's tail to above the hocks and when I gave them some company, he chewed their tails, too. As it rained continuously all summer, it was not an option to put anything on their tails. He stopped doing it at about 5 months, so I trimmed them straight. No problems with muddy tails through the winter. :)
