My four day foal was three legged lame. We immediately suspected a fracture. On xray, it looked like a hairline of the fibula which was reasonably good. Two days later.. still crippled. Vet has determined an infection due to high white blood cell count, a lot of swelling around stifle and down to hock, thus assuming infection of his growth plate. Joint came up clean. Also a patent urachus. Are giving very heavy antibiotics and a lot of praying. Anyone experience a similar situation? Outcome etc...

not had one in quite such a young foal but we had a few last year.. one they thought was going to have to be put down due to the extent of the infection.... he stayed on doxycyline for 6 weeks... vet couldn't believe the x ray retakes!!! he's still with us as naughty as ever!

what antibiotics is your chap on?
good luck i hope it goes well... (But reluctantly say.. your chances aren't that great!) I have my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for the info Rachio. He is now on rifampicin and zithromax. Initially when we thought fracture, he was on gentomycin and lupin over the weekend. I am actually living abroad and hes in Ireland.. so am just communicating with my vet by phone. Everything seemed to have been going so well.
