Advice please... I own a 10yr OTTB gelded in February. He still shows stallion traits ie poos on poop piles & gets erect when there’s a mare in adjoining paddock. I’m in Bahrain & our stables are in pairs, sharing one AC unit over the summer months. The horses are closed in 8am to 4pm & 8pm to 6am, so they only have each other for company. There are bars between the 2 stables. My stable mate (gelding) is moving out & the YM is putting a pregnant mare in next to him. The mare is quite aggressive to other horses. She is due April & im a little anxious to say the least! The owner intends to leave the mare to foal & live next door to mine with her baby until weaning. Should i be worried?

That seems a bad idea in every way, the mare will be worse as time goes on and it may impact on how the foal develops, she could even having issues carrying it if she is really upset, yours may be more stallion like and unhappy if she is constantly going at the bars I would probably want a cover over them but that will restrict airflow and they will be even more isolated, sometimes YM just do not look at the bigger picture so it may be worth having a quiet word to see if the mare could be found somewhere better suited, if you make it about her well being rather than your concerns about your horse it may be better received.

The mare is moving in tomorrow morning, I’m quietly hoping she shows immediate signs of displeasure so they’ll move her elsewhere. The owner of the mare is also Bahraini, they do things differently here!

I think in that case I'd be moving my horse. I just cannot see a scenario where this is going to end well and if the other parties aren't interested in being sensible then I'd be removing myself from the equation.

The mare is likely to be constantly flying at the bars to tell your horse to p*** off. Once her foal is born there is great potential for the foal to be injured with her trying to defend it from yours. Very easy for it to get kicked in the scrum.

I agree with you all. Having never had experience with pregnant mares before i just wanted clarificaction that its a really bad idea. Common sense really but the Bahrainis are so laid back with their methods it quite jaw dropping...
