Foaling

As most of you may know, my two are due to have a foal over the next few months. This is mias foal and its maes first.

Im in two minds whether to foal them inside or out.

What is everyones honest opinion on where to foal?

We always foal ours outside in a small field with a gentle slope, we keep a close eye on them, but it means they can't get cast, or try to foal with bum against a wall, or accidently tread on the foal trying to get up in a small space.

Mine is a maiden and will foal inside. She will be monitored on CCTV.

It's always preferable to have them foal outside because of the risk factors; however it's not always possible.

Mine are foaling outside but with the option to move inside if needs be.

I've had mares foal inside and out, I would prefer them to foal out, but, as Tia said having a stable available as an option is wise, if the weather is foul the mare might not care but it may not be so good for the foal.

We had one maiden foal unexpectedly outside and she was terrified of her newborn and ran away, it was NOT funny trying to catch a stressed out mare in the pitch dark in a 10 acre field with other mares galloping about too.

Last year I planned to foal out (maiden mare) but the weather turned bad so I bourght her in at night. The second night I bourght her in she foaled. It was a big stable tho, 19ft X19ft . Turned out 24hrs later. carried on bringing in at night till weather better.

YO has started preparing a field for my two, mia is due first and she had a foal previously. He is keeping the large foaling box free for me, just incase.

Ive never had a horse foal with me before, the closer and closer it gets to the date, the more im panicking!

mine foaled inside-hers was born when it was about 3degrees in the day!i slept in the stable next door in a tent.luxury hey!foal watch glamour

if its warm enough foaling outside in a safe paddock is fine undoubtably better if you can have some kind of system to keep warm and nearby to keep an eye on progress.

Mine foaled outside at some ungodly hour in the morning. No problems with the actual foaling...but then it rained a lot and I had to buy a NZ foal rug...as the mare wouldn't go into the field shelter.
(When the vet came out to check them he insisted I put them in the shelter and then took the foal away from the mare then injected them - mare freaked out.....dim vet gave her a shelter phobia!)

Interesting thread as i will be going through this next year - question for those of you who mention foaling outside but monitoring with CCTV - how do you go about doing this in a field??? or is maybe a foaling alarm better etc??

Mine are foaled inside with cctv, but i do have a large foaling box (24x20) to minimise the risks of getting cast etc etc.
