confused.gif
I want to show my foal after shes weaned (Sept/Oct time) in a couple of shows in November (one at the beginning one at the end).

Trouble is shes got the thickest wholliest coat ever on her back and rump.

How do you get rid of it ? or am I being stupid and all the foals at the show will be like that??

Should I rug her up when she weaned to hopefully get rid of it ???

Shes a welsh cob x arab for info.......

Thanks

She'll still have her foal coat at the moment, which will go in time, grooming helps but they do tend to just hang on to it until they want to let go!
By November though, you'll be getting winter coat in, but it should be her actual colour rather than foal coat.

Not sure what the general consensus is Re; Foal rugging, but I showed my mare as a youngster, (through the winter, from being 8 months old), and found the the best thing was to rug her in and out of stable.
In field she had a New Zealand with hood, and in stable she had a rug, and full face hood. Therefore although she developed a little bit of coat, it was knowhere near wooly lol. (But it did get dusty).

Hope that helps. P.s. Will say, that she has had to be heavily rugged every winter since, (as a result I think), and I would only recommend if you have safe fencing etc.. As foals and rugs dont always mix well... Have fun showing x

Rug her.

At least then the coat she has will lie flat and look better.

Do be prepared to be up against foals that have been rugged all year though.

Mine was born in Feb and had the wooliest coat ever! It has now all come out and she has a silky summer coat which I am going to try and keep for as long as possible so she doesn't get her full winter coat until the foal shows are over.

I only managed to achieve this by her being rugged up indoors and out (except in the few hot sunny days we had this year) and of course lots of grooming!

Thought I would have to rug, which Im totally fine about and she will be too. Seems to take everything in her stride. Is there any certain weight I need to be looking at?? Or are most of them the same for foal rugs (she'd only be in about a 4ft rug)

It can all change very quickly! Mine looked like this on 13th July:

Bathed, and rugged for a few days beforehand.

And by 5th August, she looked totally different and like this

Today is what? the 21st? She has lost the last light bits except for some 'ankle socks'

She has been rugged at night the last week or so.
