What are the nicest names you've come across for a horse or pony? Or the most appropriate?, mine include Valentine and Mountain Thyme.

My previous mare was Laughing Esprit in her passport which I always thought was beautiful. Her stable name was Inca and I liked that a lot too.

Our mini gelding’s proper name is Meadowfox Voyager and I think that’s pretty sweet as well.

3 of our homebred have what I think are lovely names - Song Of The Stars, Rainsong and Rainbow Quest. Not so much in the pet name department though - SOS, Rains & RQ's (pronounced arcs) ??

We have had some lovely names racehorses over the years. Precious Cargo - well Cargo certainly suited him as his head was as big as a Cargo ship! I know I am being biased again but Grand Morning I quite like.

Gypsum was really Snow Wood Gypsum Moon, which was an awesome name.

So many Highlands have wonderful registered names, but not mine. So I picked a barn name I liked.

My colt's (alleged) sire is called Ventarron. Means strong gale. I like it.

A uni friend called her weanling (who is about 19 now...yikes!) Valaraucar, a really, really obscure Tolkien reference. I think she became embarassed by her own geekiness, and the horse became Volly.

If either Caso or Foinavon had been female, they would have been named after a Wheel of Time character, and I don't care what anybody thought. So many wonderful female names in that book.

If I had my way our ponies would have names from some of my favourite books! But as it stands our prefix is Mirkwood so that will have to do ?

I remember one called Tank, a dark grey cob gelding, about 15h high and the same wide, who trundled about in slow motion.
Whoever named him was a genius!

I had Fair Grace on loan who was very pretty and dainty. Although someone came up to me in the collecting ring and told me no one could stay on her as a 5 year old. She was a lovely first pony. I also knew a pally called blonde and handsome.

Some of mine have been, Smokey Joe who I named after a tramp, Columbus, Conquistador, Taklishim, Malachy, Shiloh and Bramble one of my favourite horse names. Plus Storm who arrived the night the local railway line fell into the sea in the extreme storm conditions.

Two of my favourites when I first got into horses was Gold Blend and Firefox (Foxy to his mates). They were liveries and stunning compared to all the cobs in the riding school. Firefox loved attention.

My first horse was called Shamaal and the horse I have now is Storm. Apparently Storm was born in the middle of a thunder storm. I’ve just realised they are both weather related as a shamaal is a desert wind storm. I can’t take credit for naming either of them but I like both names.

Mine has the best name I have ever heard. I didnt find out what it was till I had bought him, but I would have bought him based on the name alone! He is called Absolutely Awesome :D Sadly his stable name is Dennis which I hate, so we call him Denny. But I genuinely think his registered name is a brilliant name, made even better by the fact that he was a terrible racehorse and not awesome in the slightest!

I don’t like my horses passport name (it’s a very plain undescriptive one syllable human name) and have an awesome name I’d like to change it to, based on his personality. But it seems a waste of money to change it especially as he is now in his late teens. But it is such an awesome name for him!
Actually it’s only £15 plus postage.....and I can’t find the name registered on the BE website....and the “bad luck” thing is an old wives tale, right??
