Hm i hadnt thought about that, and it his just his near fore thats giving him the problems. Are there any telltale signs of an absess that i can look for?
Sometimes, but not always, there is heat in the foot. Might be worth ringing your farrier to see if he is in the area tomorrow and can come in and examine the foot. If you can't get the farrier out promptly, then get the vet to come out instead.
Just been through the foot abscess thing. In this case the mare became very lame overnight on near fore. She was pointing her toe and quite hopping. The farrier was out that day and said it could be an abscess. Anyway nearly four weeks on she is sound but it has been a long slog of poulticing and tubbing her foot every day. At one point she was in a lot of pain and it was awful to see. The farrier will be the best person to deal with this as he will hopefully locate the source of the pain. You could try hot tubbing the foot in salt water, hand hot, and this may give some relief until you can get the farrier out.
I'll talk with YM tommorow see what she thinks as shes very good with this sort of thing. We were thinking its probably a jarr injury from the hard ground, as the fields are rock solid which he goes around like a loony in, and also i went XC schooling last week and hes not been quite right since but got progressively worse.
