What would you go without for your horse?
Luxuries e.g. Anky pads, nice clothes for yourself etc, or at the other end of the scale... living off beans on toast? no luxuries? £400 run around car, no social life e.g. working 24/7?

Just interested in what people would go without in order to keep thier horse with them and healthy and well :)

I already do the living off beans and toast, don't have any nice clothes other than ones dating ack several years, never buy any luxuries for myself and only buy what the horses need. I don't have a social life and I work 6 days a week longs hours but I have my horses at work so not so bad I guess.

If I suddenly found myself without any money what so ever I think I would sell my ex racer (he's a project anyway), my car, get a night job and ebay everything that wasn't tied down before I gave up my cob x. He's the only thing that keeps me going when things get rough.

I seem to be living off tinned soup and coffee at the moment, I haven't been on holiday for six years, and am investigating getting extra work over the weekend, just to keep up my payments to Dodson&Horrell and Weatherbeeta !

Hmm, I have a £100 car, spend as little as possible on food, don't own a pair of normal shoes that don't have holes in them (it's going to be a long winter) but thankfully I work in a pub so get drinks bought for me :P if it wasn't for that it could get quite lonely!

My horses live in luxury, I live in a tumble down cottage! I am currently out of work and living on nothing myself while the horses are still living like princes. However - if I don't find a job soon I will have to sell the lorry and possibly J to his loaner. If I still can't find a job and once I have ebayed everything I don't need I will sell B as I will not loose my house for the sake of a horse. That may sound harsh but I have worked too hard over the last 20 years to loose everything.

I'm another, no new clothes, cheap car, live on the cheapest menu I can come up with whilst making sure the children have a balanced diet (and yes, beans figure in there quite a lot). We are struggling on because last year our circumstances changed dramatically and left us in a lousy position financially but we don't know how long it will be like this and don't want to make any rash decisions regarding the horses and then it all go back to how it was. We live in a huge victorian house that is very beautiful but incredibly expensive to keep warm and the thermostat never goes above 12 degrees to try and make the LPG last a bit longer.

Well since OH left almost 3 months ago, I have sold 2 out of 4 cars (another will go once its fixed) and anything that is 'not needed' is currently for sale! I am looking to downsize my 3 bed house to a 2 bed flat in order to keep myself, the pups, pony and little girl! I have also changed super markets. I haven't bought new cloths which I would do once or twice a week usually...........

I no longer have the ability to pop the the feed/tack shop and spend £200 on a whim but I'm glad I went ott when I had the chance, since some rugs are already ruined and its only Nov!

I've given up just about everything....

There was a time when I was working for someone who was completely taking advantage and not paying me, so I was working up to 22 hours a day to pay for my horses (days at the yard, nights in the pub), and I was eating tomato soup and bread from the bag!

I buy £7.99 jeans from Primark so that my horses can wear Rambo rugs and Albion tack... but to me, a Rambo rug or a beautiful new bridle is worth so much more than a very expensive dress or pair of shoes.... I get much more pleasure from buying things for my horses than I do buying things for myself, so I guess it's all relative!

I would work 24/7 if i have to - i dont sleep anyway :p. I already live off of nothing and have no nice clothes! My horse has what he needs and always is provided for food and bed wise, is insured and has regular teeth, back, saddle etc checks and he needs £120 set of shoes every 4 weeks - which he gets (and it almost breaks the bank!) :)

i have an slr which i would sell. take on a 2nd job but really have no time as i have uni but hey ho!

but before i do all that ^ id put her on the cheapest livery i could find. (grass) :)

Everything and anything :)

Already live on cheap food, havent bought any new clothes since .. um i actually cant remember  Luxuries? what are they? Social life .. gave up on that years ago!

Is it worth it? YES :D

I made sure I was able to afford all aspects of owning a horse before I bought mine....(and technically, the other half 'owns' him)

As a couple, we have reserves of cash for rainy days. We also have horse insurance. I wouldn't hesitate if Arnie needed £0000's spent on him though

As for all the 'luxuries'.... I could still afford to buy them but instead, I buy the horse another item to add to his wardrobe :D

If "horses" seriously came between myself and a "normal" life in a long term manner, meaning i had to take 2 or 3 jobs/sell my car for a cheaper one, sell my home, etc etc then they would be PTS.... end of an era.....

Well I would PTS but I see where you're coming from certainly.

I horse is part of my life, but he doesn't outright own it!!

**heads outside to bow down to his Lordship.....**

I have given up everything - my marriage, then following my divorce I downsized from a 3-bed, to a 2-bed, to a 1-bed, to a mobile home.....

No social life, no money, clothes all bought from Tescos :p....

I dont regret any of it for a second, my horse and dogs are the most important things in my life sadly enough!

Oh Dear.......or should that be Good Grief?

I have £7000 of credit card debt, no longer go out unless OH pays, only buy clothes in the sale or off of ebay and when everything else is ruined, I don't buy horsey luxuries either I buy what they need second hand off of ebay, I also don't buy things for the house etc.

I sometimes buy myself a milkshake or the occasional book as a treat but that's about it.

I have no savings left either.

I do however have a cat and three horses, they are my luxuries.

One is retired, one is a light hack only and is the reason for my credit card debt as he's had 2 serious injuries in 18 months and teatment has gone well over my insurance limit, the third a cheap project so I had something to ride has come in lame today :(

If it's anything serious or that requires long term box rest I will have to have him pts as I have nothing that I can sell to cover the addition expenses that wont be covered by his insurance.

i give myself a treat of £10 a month to buy makeup clothes oh yes you can buy loads with £10 the rest is baby money - her eyes are priceless god love her all she been through and all now - she owes nOthing and all i spend on my beautiful girl is a memory to hold xxx

Nothing.

Sorry, my horses are my selfish luxury, when/if they become one that impedes on the way my family lives then I downsize or get out of them entirely.

I don't spend vast amounts on myself (:o with the exception for my fetish for boots where I think nothing of paying $100's for a pair - from my own money though) but I certainly don't expect my daughter and OH to go without because of my hayburners.

I have Boarders in that pay for the upkeep of my own herd, the stallion pays his way and the youngsters I breed or bring on, bring in an income too.

Its shocking how much you can spend on animals! Last weekend I spent £500 in one day :o

I took £200 out of the bank in cash to pay blacksmith and farmer for hay, diesel and other bits and pieces. I then spent another £200 in Mole Valley on dog, horse and chicken food plus bits and pieces. I also ordered a £100 rug that I will pay for when I collect (so you could say £600) and then I spent £100 in Tescos on shopping. :o

The cupboards are practically bare, its my daughters birthday soon and the fuel guage is almost on empty - so I can see myself spending another £200 tomorrow :(

I seem to be hemorrhaging money at the moment and I can hardly bring myself to look at the oil tank because I know that that needs filling up soon too :(

Thankfully I can afford it - at the moment - but how long that lasts I don't know! Of course the chickens could go but the dogs and the horse? Nope, I would do my absolute upmost to keep them til the bitter end.

At the moment I don't have a house to support or any other commitments being a student but I can say that it wouldn't effect the things I'd be willing to give up in order to keep my horses and dogs. I don't go out shopping for new clothes, I don't go out a lot so that's not something that I would miss- my only occasional luxury are books. I would give up a hell of a lot to keep my horses and dogs- I'd eat basic beans for however long it took to get back on my feet and I'd work as many jobs as need be. My animals are always going to come first- they are my responsibility, they rely on me and I owe it to them to take care of them.

I would give up absolutely anything for my horse
She means the absolute world to me, and I couldn't be without her.
I'd rather have no money and the one thing in the world that I always wanted. Then to have money but be miserable because I can't have the one thing I actually want.

The horses are my cash flow. They put money in bank and food on table and roofs over us. If this was no longer then I would liquidate and start a new business because I like to make money work to make more. I will not be in situation where there would be no money but if I was then horses would go.

Not a lot to be honest.

If I couldn't have afforded them, then I wouldn't have bought them.

If my circumstances change dramatically, then I will sell them (both very saleable - would not have bought anything I didn't think I could sell on barring accident).

I have been offered 2 free horses in the last few months - one of them is one that I sold and she can't keep anymore. I'm sorry about that, but I can't keep her either as I've moved on and have 2 new horses. I won't take her because I can't afford to keep another one, however much my heart wants her back. Push comes to shove, then she'll have to be pts.

Well we have no heating (apart from fire) and my car has run out of tax. But my horse got a new rug/teath done/shoes/vet bill this month.
