We (vet and I) have decided to try bute 1x daily for a month and see what happens. She said it’s almost certainly arthritis which breaks my heart. I know and have known for years he has it but it was ok, he used to warm up through it and then when he retired was fine. He actually has coped very well with retiring aswell. I’d always said I wouldn’t retire this horse, if he wasn’t rideable that would be the end. I didn’t think he’d handle it at all, he’s surprised me.
This latest sudden soreness all round has been pretty awful. He’s been grouchy and in pain and I won’t keep him like that.
So the plan is to bute for a month, unless of course he still isn’t happy. If we can keep him comfortable like this and more importantly happy then great. If not we will start with the worst leg and try to isolate the worst bits. Inject maybe, maybe look at other options.
I’ve done lots and lots of googling and am confident he’s on a good joint supplement that delivers the right amounts of ingredients, bar MSM which I’ve bought separately and added so I think that’s as good as he can get.
Boswellia hasn’t helped, neither has devils claw.
She agreed if we can’t make him “himself” he will be pts, the thought of this is devastating but...
