Just a follow on from the how do you cope in winter thread, after suffering with frozen and burst pipes for what seems like forever now i followed the thread with a lot of interest......anyway one poster had recommended heat tape.

Told my dad about this as we managed to buy some on ebay, 35.00 for 4 metres. Our tap is in the tack room, is well lagged and we have a hose coming off of it, and a shorter hose in the winter. Its constantly frozen and has burst once this week. Although last winter it burst about 5 times! My dad fitted the heat tape yesterday and this morning everything was working fine! Its amazing how stressful it can be having to sort water for five horses.....which resulted in doing trips from home!

Can't recommend this enough and thanks to whoever posted about this as me and my dad.....even though he's a builder had never heard of it. :)

Probably a stupid question, but how does it work? Is it literally just tape which you wrap around the pipes? I was thinking of getting some for the yard but I have to be able to justify the cost to the YO before I do, and need to know exactly how it works!

It's electrically heated so you do need access to an electric socket. The tape is wrapped around the pipe to the tap from where it emerges from the ground up to the tap. We only turn the tape on when the weather is forecast to be freezing, but it is brilliant and means that we don't have to lug water up from the house - you can keep a hosepipe indoors and just bring it up to the yard to fill all the water tubs in the stables from a working tap - luxury!

That sounds great! I wish I'd known about it in the past. Unfortunately it wouldn't work for us at the moment because the electrics are too far from the tap but otherwise it would have been a good thing to have. Now as for one that runs off a car battery ... :D

Try self regulating pipe heat tape. The kits come with everything you need. Like I said my dad got ours from eBay but I'm not sure what it was listed as

glad its worked for you I may have been one of the people you saw who said about it as I have it here and it really is great especially when you have had to cope with frozen pipes for years. its so simple and so effective there really should be more yards using it even if its only for one tap.

Thank you for the recommendation, i can't believe we haven't done this sooner. Last year was a nightmare. The pipes burst in the night..... The water was hitting the ceiling and drenched everything in the tackroom. Not to mention the stream that was running under the door and outside into the ménage!
