It has taken me ages to find these pictures, and I had to enlist my Mummy's help!

BUT, a growed-up English Black and Tan Lab, competing in a Field Trial, so KC registered and most definately a Lab

I was thinking about it last night and how the Foxes that were bred for temperament suddenly developed different coloured coats etc, from no where (I mean they were certainly pure bred foxes)
So it's hardly surprising that these random colours pop up from time to time, especially in the working strains that aren't necessarily bred for looks.

That's a good point

I had never heard of black and tan labs though, so I can now say I have learnt something from HHO

Is it docked?

ETA - no, I see it isn't, just a funny angle on some of the pictures. There was obviously some very enthusiastic wagging going on

You would have liked Barney Hen, but he had quite a spaniel-y side to him....

'Come back? Yeah, be right there.... in a minute..... yep, on my way..... almost ready....'

'Oh look, you seem to have left your beer on the floor - allow me'

'Retrieve? When I'm smelling stuff? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha you must be kidding'

I like the black and tan Labs, and if it's a genetic blip that can happen to reputable breeders, that's all well and good and I would be fine with owning such a dog. The problem arises when unscrupulous people try to sell off colours on the basis of colour only, with zero regard for health testing or performance.

Well-regarded BT breeders sometimes throw mismarks. The dogs can have hearing issues because of the white on the head, but certainly not always:

And then you get into really iffy territory, which is off coloureds, mostly reds, but there are blues, too, 99% of which come from puppy mills; I saw a Weimeraner coloured BT the other day, asked the owner where he was from, and she said a pet store

I do adore the fawn BTs, though, and would rescue one in a heartbeat.

And sometimes blue eyes appear, too:
