Following on from earlier post a few days ago when my youngster had a tantrum in the round pen.
Took lots of your advice.
This is what happen last night.
Firstly separated him from my old horse.
Upped the disipline and gave him a poke with a stick when he tried to crowd me in the field.
Walked boldly up to him in field and tried to get fieldsafe headcollar on - he mooched off so I chased him away, did this several times, whilst making a fuss of old boy and feeding him. Youngster comes back for a stroke, tried to get headcollar on, mooches off again , he got chased away, comes back stands quietly, headcollar on with no issues, carrot given , Then lead nicely round field, couple of times on 12ft line, backed up, he decided to lunge himself nicely, so I went along with it was it wasn't planning on lunging him but thought I could use it as a training opportunity. Lunged on both reins practicing "whoa" command and was a complete angel stopping gently every time. Tied him up to fine piece of baler twine outside field shelter applied sudo cream to sarcoid and fly repellent no fidgetting about. Then he pulled back broke baler twin and ambled off tripping over lead rope as he went, retrieved him and tied up to two strands of baler twine !! (lol) pulled back and broke it and ambled off. Duely retrieved again tied to rubber inner tyre.- stood quietly for half an hour and had a little groom. finally released and given his dinner!!
(I hasten to say I ve never tied him to field shelter before hence the thin baler twine to start with).
Anyway what a huge change or maybe he is just back to normal, and perhaps a little subdued becausse I ve taken away his "comfy blanket" - my old horse and give him a telling off. I did speak pretty sharply to him and was VERY clear about what I expected from him and what I would do if he didn't comply.
No tantrums, just a little stubborness and behaving like a big lazy irish dope.
Perfect!!
I am sure this will give some people a laugh, but I hope others will see it as a success, I ve just written down pretty much as it happened and I am very happy today as he is just being a normal horse again.
Thanks again everyone
