Recently started reading forum and am amazed how angry and upset people get about how other people feed/rug/clip/turn out their own horses. I would interfere if I felt that the horse was suffering but most people want the best for their horses and act accordingly, given their personal circumstances. During the 14 years I knew my mare, she remained happy and healthy under the following circumstances: working livery in riding school with no turnout during week, all horses and ponies turned out together Sunday afternoon until Tuesday lunchtime; small private yard, turned out in small mixed group in summer during day, stabled at night, limited winter turnout; 24/7 turnout with two geldings; 24/7 summer turnout and limited winter turnout with one other mare.
She was also fully clipped and heavily rugged, blanket clipped with medium rug, bib and belly clip with no rug, depending on her workload and living circumstances.
OK, we were lucky in that she was a calm confident mare who quickly worked out the yard routine and settled down with it. So long as she had food, water, exercise and some interaction with other horses and people, life was fine for her.
Has anyone ever said to you thanks for telling me I am lousy at looking after my horse?
