Hello.

I noticed some of you on the other thread commented you had bought run down places in need of renovation etc,

This is what my partner and I are now in a position to do. We need a few acres - not loads, and some form of dwelling,

This is not likely to come up on rightmove ;) so I wondered if those of you who had done it could tell me where you had found your places? Many thanks, gingerbread lattes and toasted fruit bread as its admin day for us sales people on the road- Starbucks is my current campsite :)

The place we had in Wales was found in the property section of a local paper purely by luck, they are out there you just have to look.

If I was property hunting now I would just be giving all the Estate Agents in my chosen area/s a wish list and telling them to get on with it. :)

Have you tried advertising? That sometimes throws up results :)

As it can be a bit of an arse to negotiate the following link should take you to all propertie within a 30mile radius of Sheffield with land. Just substitute your own location:)

clicky clicky

found ours on primelocation - you can specify land on there :)
we got a 5 bed, 5 reception room, 5 other rooms 'thing' (eccentric bungalow made of 3 farm cottages and a 1880's flat roof extension that they didnt put a 2nd floor on - yes its v odd!) set in 4 acres in for same as what we sold a 2 up 2 down cottage eith no land just down the road - we have however spent a huge amount of time and money renovating and are only half way through.... its a big commitment but will be worth it. finally got heating in which really helps moral!

Register with local auction houses, scan local papers, try Rightmove/ Prime Location as they do get land...

Best way (how I got mine) was to eye up prospectice places, find the land owner, and let it be known I was interested should they ever want to sell. Now is perfect time of year, a note in a Christmas card is ideal. I did this, was offered the land in May, and it was mine by July!

We found in local areas certain estate agents specialised in land and we registered with them. They are also the ones that do machinery auctions etc so maybe keep an eye out for that sort of thing.

Auctions are a good place to start if you have the money lined up.

Fisher German, Howking and Harrison, Berry's, Carter Jonas, Strutt and Parker all have agricultural sections

We bought our run down farm with 12 acres just by being in the right place at the right time, we were literally driving passed when the for sale sign went up, we knocked on the door and bought it there and then!

That was 11 years ago and we're still doing it up :D

It was advertised by a local estate agent in the local paper but that was 20 yrs ago and it is a very horsey area, with many smallholdings given over to horses. The local auction houses often have properties on their books, some of which are not just for auction.

and in Grampian (Aberdeenshire) its ASPC

I found our place (totally derelict and with 40 acres...:-D) when I was 'browsing' the internet. Sealed bids closed the following Tuesday....only OH saw it in the flesh before we had to submit a binding bid. Scary or what!

Weve owned it 8 years now and have lived here fulltime for 4. It was worth it (despite the year in the static caravan in the Cairngorms!)

We bought our house through Ruralscene earlier this year. It's a little 3bed Victorian semi in need of work with 6 acres of fenced paddocks. We could only afford it as the house is pretty small and there were no stables etc. We have planning permission to double the size of the house and build a small yard and a 20x40 arena. We are reapplying for the stables planning permission so it is more suitable for us but as it already has permission we don't expect too many problems.
I regularly kept an eye on all the equestrian property websites for a couple of years but never expected to find anything in our price range particularly in Surrey. It did take nearly a year from when I first saw it until we moved it but it was well worth all the years of looking as I love having the horses at home and I am so excited at building a yard to my own specifications.

Thanks everyone you hve all given us excellent starting points.

We have seen a place with a "storage" barn- but it's weather boarded, has plug sockets and lights from the photos! Interested to see what PP is at the moment,

Just the thread I was looking for as I am looking for this too. Sadly you can't get anything on a budget in Cambs/beds unless you want to live in the fens...and I definitely don't!!!

We bought through Rural and Equestrian , in 2006 . Really really nice people , and I'm someone who has dealt with some rotten estate agents ! Bought a 5 bed house , with 5 acres and stables in a very horsey village in the Fens . Yes property is cheaper in the Fens , up to some part of Lincs , but that's because it's a very Marmite kind of place . What we love about it with its huge skies , massive sense of space , is what others describe as bleak and unfriendly. Personally , we love it . Our village is friendly , social , and as everyone has horses on the road , we help each other out as and when . It's the only place I've had my vet living 3 doors down, my farrier next door, and my hay and straw farmer in the same road !

My OH did endless google searches 'property for sale with land in......' and found our lovely little house.

I didnt initially like the look of it, and was convinced it would be sold by the time we got our act together and got our house on the market, it did take several months to sort out selling ours/moving as there were complications along the way but we got there in the end.
