sorry the photos are massive! Following on from my previous posts about abscesses this is the lame hoof I suspected he had an abscess in. The poultice came off clean but I suspect it could have come through the coronet band (see photo) and Ive missed it. He seems sound today but Ive put on another wet poultice and start with a dry one tomorrow.

Has anyone any comments on this hoof please, do they look like exit holes?

He's been unshod behind since july and the farrier has never had to do anything to them. His heels look very soft as these photos were taken after a 24 hour poultice came off and he has just been soaking his hoof in a bucket.

thanks

Not sure at all, sorry. Will be interesting to see what others say :)

thanks the more I think about it the more I don't think they are exit holes, even if it burst a couple of days ago I would expect to see some dried blood or similar around the area. I'm thinking maybe he just stood on a stone and bruised his sole and I just assumed it was an abscess because of his track record, time will tell I guess but he seems ok today as can put full weight on on a tight circle.

No that's just the periopole, if it has burst out the top of coronet it would be further up. I don't think it has burst yet...

Here is a photo of my mare after an abscess burst in two places at the coronet. The photo was taken a few days after it burst. It was hard to see at first and you had to press on the coronet band above the hole to open it, so that you could see it. The main clue that it had burst, was that her fur above the holes was sticky and wet looking.
