aware of FEI passport costs, but can anyone give me some rough figures for transport/diesel, stabling, entries and extras i wont have thought of please.

approx is fine........just so i know how many banks to rob between now and 2013!

I was there as a spectator this year - it looked like a great place to compete! Their website has all the details of entry fees, it looks like they do a single fee that covers stabling and entry. I can't remember which document has all the info but it's somewhere in here:

http://www.sunshinetour.net/en/index.htm

I imported a horse with John Parker from Vejer (the town next to Montenmedio) last year and it was about £750, though presumably you'll be driving yourself. It would be worth seeing if you can share a lift, maybe post on the BD forum for lift-shares (closer to the time obv.!).

Oh, and I'd be happy to give Vejer hotel and restaurant recommendations - the best jamon Iberico in the region is available at a little bar not far from Montenmedio!!

Sorry, just realised the link takes you to the homepage! Go to Dressage, hover over the "01\03-20\03 CDI3* Sunshine Tour" link then go to "Info Riders".

If doing a lorry share bear in mind that you could be very restricted in terms of space for shavings, haylage, feed, tack lockers etc. The major benefit to driving yourself is that you don't have to be restricted in terms of your own luggage either like you would if flying. scooter or bikes are a must for getting around. would also be worth looking at the other tours in Portugal or Italy...Arezzo is beautiful though am not 100% sure if they have dressage.

I went a few years ago, got my horse a lift with someone else then had flights to pay for, car hire, took all my feed but not enough room on lorry for my hay but you can buy hay/haylage and feed out there and shavings. You can book a tackroom either just a tiny one for you or space in a larger shared one. I stayed in the hotel that most of the riders stay in, wasn't going to but was recommended that it would be better as you are then around all the other riders etc.
Worked out pretty expensive but great fun and would love to go again one day!
Also, if you have other animals/horses at home you have to get someone to do them while you are away.
If you fly out don't do what I did - booked a cheap flight with a budget airline then got stung with a massive excess luggage bill!
Good luck and have fun out there!

when you say pretty expensive, i guess you mean thousands? any guestimations if you can remember, would be appreciated.

dont mind buying shavings out there, was the haylage ok or very rich? he's a bit ulcery so if very rich id have to take my own.

Small tour which would be what PSG is cost €1450 per horse which includes stable & entries. You can go down usually from Feb 1st on at no extra cost which is a bonus as plenty of time to school and relax. Tack rooms €200. All info here:

Also worth noting you would want to be entering approx nov/dec before you go!

prob not the same but looked into going on showjumping tour few years ago.. with entries and stabling, diesel, accomodation, feed etc out there (was planning on going with friend in 7.5t so no room for hay, bedding etc) food for us, and all the other things we could think of was going to work out somewhere between £3K and £5K each depending on how many weekends we stayed out there for, type of accom etc. would have also meant taking some unpaid leave from work so in the end we decided against it and spent considerably less money travelling to some big british shows and treating as multiple small holidays :D

From what others are saying (more in the know on this than me) you won't get any change out of £3000, but I hope you do go and do well, you are doing a marvelous job with him and it's good to hear of a rider producing their own, and a TB at that, instead of buying very expensive warmbloods.

In 1983 I had a good TB that went to AM so I know you will do it, he's a lovely boy and correctly done, well done, I am following your boy with interest.

I think you are loking at more than 3k. If entries are around 1500 euros, transport there and back will be about 1200 - 1500, then accomodation, car hire, shavings, hay, flights etc.
I think it cost me around 6k when I did it, I did have my 3 yr old daughter with me though so had 2 flights each way plus a friend came to give me a hand as impossible to do it on my own with horse and child!

I think our 3K was worked out with us both living in the lorry for the duration (with hook-up) and sharing diesel  saying that, my horse developed navicular the following year and I'll never have the horse or the nerve to jump at that level again so if you can afford it, you and your gorgeous horse should definately go, always wished I had, even though i'd probably still be paying off the bank loan now :o

It does look great fun as well as a good competition. There's something very Jilly Cooper about it!!!! I'm sure there must be a lot of good parties and naughty goings-on in all the posh horseboxes, what with all the dashing continental men in tight breeches and skinny girls in long boots ;) Oh, and the on-site dodgy-looking disco!!

Ok, so probably not the point but hey, I have an active imagination!!

Are you looking to go for the full 3 weeks? Someone I know said she was booked to go but decided against it because it was going to cost around £7k for the 3 weeks. Thats if you included accommodation / food for yourself and horse and helper etc, plus diesel, other travel costs etc. She also runs a BD venue so would need people to cover for her back home so it was just too expensive. Entries are the least of your worries. If its cost thats concerning you then maybe try holland, france or belguim as considerably cheaper to get to and from and a lot less hours in the lorry for the horse. Its basicly 2 days travelling for the horses so its quite hard on them. Obviously lots of horses cope fine, but its something to consider. Don't forget hartpury and hickstead, (although a lot harder to get a GB entry). Look into taking the eurotunnel accross the channel aswell, might be smoother and definately quicker.

The last small tour I was on cost $12,000 for 2 horses & 3 people (about £7,400), we drove everywhere and mostly stayed with friends - v expensive!

There is generally no comparison between horse costs in the USA & Europe though....USA is frighteningly expensive!

@noname. I didn't think you were allowed to take livestock on the eurotunnel....may be completely wrong though ?

You are right and wrong - yes you can, but only with certain companies...

PS - it is tons of money but worth it. Having been lucky enough to have taken part in the early days of the ST (SJ tho!) it is something I won't ever forget...lots of fun and frolics, decent competition and plenty of people to learn from :)

Blimey and to think I didn't enter a dressage comp the other week as the entries were £15 per class - (not worth it for the venue) :o

Go go go!
At the end of the day a nice holiday costs 10k and the sunshine tour lasts for longer and the memories will stay forever.

If I ever had the chance to do something like that I'd snap it up :).

On what planet does a nice holiday cost 10K?! Two of us went to New Zealand last year for a month via a few days in Singapore and it didn't cost anywhere near that! An all-inclusive snow boarding week earlier this year for two didn't cost that either!! About to go to the Pyrenees for a week and have rented a house which sleeps 6 (only 2 of us going for various reasons) and the whole thing including travel is less than £500! Two weeks all inclusive to Barbados only costs £5K for two people through Virgin at the moment.

I want your kind of 'nice' holiday (and the budget to afford it of course)!! ;)

Yes, the surfaces in Spain are notorious! I remember someone who went there two years ago saying they wouldn't go again because it was like riding on concrete (they went to Vidauban this year instead.....)

Have you thought about looking into sponsorship?
I would have thought that a retrained racehorse at that level is unique and would attract a lot of interest.

Sponsorship would help with the ££'s

Hi Rambo,
There are pics of the bechtolsheimers horses on the eurotunnel (I saw them somewhere in cyberspace hence my suggestion). Wouldn't have an idea of cost though but its only 35 mins and probably a lot smoother than a boat!!

I was thinking of this!!! especially as you have kept blogs and the journey including pictures and what ever especially as you are an amateur!!!

I think you could be on to some good sponsorship with your story and journey!!!
