Following on from back person post

Yes it is true. Because they are not veterinary trained they can not dignoses a problem therefore need the vets permission to do any treament on a horse. Some vets will give permission over the phone if it is a routine thing.
If you are after a McTimothy Cario I use a very good one and I'm on the Somerset/Wiltshire border.

You dont need the vets approval for a back person to work on your horse, however its good practice to speak to your vet and let them know when and who will do the work, in case there is a problem that requires their follow up.

It is ILLEGAL for a qualified therapist to work on any animal without the permission of the animals vet. Usually all it takes is a courtesy call from the owner to the vet practice.

Any therapist of any discipline, animal or human, is not qualified to DIAGNOSE a condition in an animal, only a vet can do this and these regulations prevent therapists inadvertently injuring or exacerbating an existing condition.

Echo Spaniel again.

My back person is wonderful but won't travel past Devon normally. First time before she came out she gave vets a quick call who OK'd it. But that once is sufficient for her to continue treatment for good now within the law.

If they don't get permission not only are they acting illegally but also any insurance will be invalidated and that can be both yours and theirs.

You don't need to get out your vet first. Simply contact your back person, and before the appointment THEY will contact your vet (you need to give them contact details for your vet) and obtain permission from them. Or at least thats what my back person does (ive had two and theyve both done it that way)
