Ok so different vet came out this morning. I gave him the history of the injury and he got to hoof testing. She gave almost no reaction to hoof testing, apart from a tiny nod on the inside wall. He tested every part of her hoof very thoroughly.

So he got to paring off the sole, he did a really good exam of the foot and after some time was only able to find bruising on the side which had got a reaction from the testers.

He was pretty happy it ISNT an abscess for the time being, but bruising from where she had been bouncing around on her foot (which was compacted with redgra)

So she's been buted and poulticed once a day and I should expect to see a marked improvement in 5 days, if not they will be back again and we start down the route of xray/nerve blocking and checking for a fractured pedal bone :(

Just wanted to keep all those who helped me updated with our progress.

:( sorry its not the news you had wanted.

ALTHOUGH... like i said with my mare, she was lame for some time. on field rest then when still lame got the vet. hoof testers, nerve blocks, x rays. couldnt find anything wrong, other than slight changes in the foot (which can be explained by the lifestyle and terrain of the horse, or so i was informed. ;) )

anyways, she was still hopping lame after box rest and egg bars. "apparently" she had navicular... but a few months later her front shoe fell off and an abscess was revealed.... not one singel problem since! no navicular, no eggbars, no lameness. and that was a long time ago now! :p

so dont get too disheartened yet... i did and it was all for nothing!

please keep us up to speed though, and i'l keep my fingers and toes crossed for you!

xx

Thank you W&W, I think the main thing is - knowing what we're dealing with and making the mare comfortable. She came come home and convalesce for as long as needs be - but we just want some answers for her now :)

Hope you can find some answers soon :(

I very much hope its nothing more, but if it was something like her pedal bone dont get too disheartened, my mare fractured a hind last year and she had 3 months rest with an imprint shoe on to stop the foot moving, then she was good as new. :)

That's positive news :) Thanks Cheiro1!
I am hoping that we do get some answers soon, she can then come home over winter and have whatever type of rest she needs, I can be with her most of the day then too - which I'm sure will amuse her greatly :D

Just been and read your previous posts.

My mare went lame, had a puffy fetlock and heel, looked very much like an abcess but she was negative to hoof testers and we couldn't find any obvious 'exit point' for pus.
Turned out to be a fractured proxial sesamoid bone in her fetlock - myself, my trimmer and the 3 vets that had seen her all initially though abcess.

But I hope it is just a bruise and your horse is ok x

Thanks guys, I'm one worried owner. Not had an injured horse before *yeah I know!* so I'm well overdue but not much use atm  x

I've faced most emergency medical situations in humans and have remained calm enough to run a team through it...

But I CANNOT handle any injuries with my horses.
