Following on from DieselDogs Post...

My current horse was supposed to be sold to make some money but he is still here 6 years later! He will never be sold, he has a wonderful personality but is definitely not for a lot of people and i worry he would end up being passed around. Anyway he is about to go out on loan to a really nice lady who gets on well with him so fingers crossed it will be right for both of them, if not i will have him back and try to find someone else.

Have just put a deposit down on a new horse, he is only 4 so not sure how he will turn out yet if he is everything i want in a horse he will stay, if not he will have to be sold.

This posts reminded me of sad moments

Three years ago I sold my 'never for sale' horse to come to the UK to live with my boyfriend. It was literally a horse or OH decision as I didn't have the money to fund transport nor the money to keep him away from me. He was an active stallion with good breeding so I didn't want to geld him either (I did look for a livery for him here just in case I could have dig the transport money from somewhere but nobody wanted to hear about a stallion!

or if they did the price was ridiculous). He would also not be happy grazing all days as he was a work orientated fellow.
So, I guess we should never say never as circumnstances are sometimes hard to predict...
I also sold a few youngsters I brought on but they were bought with such intention

Absolutely my mare has a home for life (barring any major life things that I couldn't sort through).

If something happened to her tomorrow and she had to be retired (age 12), she would still stay with me till the end, even if that meant I couldn't afford a second "riding" horse.

I personally have a dislike of horses being shunted on after years of being faithful mounts just because they can no longer work and being replaced with a newer fully working model.

I have no problem with people selling horses on if their circumstances change or they just don't fit with the horse as long as care is taken in doing so, but to get rid of a horse that can no longer work just because a new one is wanted is not something I could ever consider.

Would only sell if I had no way of afording to keep him, but it would brake my heart.
Have sold two horses in my life, one I still dream of today as he was a star, other one was an evil little sod and I was glad to see the back of him!!

I could never sell any of my four their with us for life. we were meant to sell ewan the shetland but never got round to it and would never part with the little dude/sod now!!!

sandy we rescued he has had a really hard life until we found him beaten with a lunge whip by a vet!!!!

(his owner) we are still finding things out about his past now and we've had him 6yrs. willie is an old man and could never sell him. maddie well i say i would never sell her !! but ask me when she is back in work and being a mare/tart!

nope, don't think i could ever sell the Bob.

It took me SO long to eventually find the perfect horse for me, that I'm not giving it up in a hurry!.

also, he's taught me SO much already, and I s still have so much to learn and do with him, and he's only young!

Also if/when i have kids, they'll be able to learn on him too.

If it ever gets to the point where i don't have time or money to provide sufficient care, then I'll loan him out until i find my feet, then have him back again.

He may not be some people's idea of the perfect horse, but he is to me

Luckily I have lots of land so can accumulate them!! Still have my first pony, no WAY is he going anywhere, he's part of the family and although was semiretired for a while is now back in work with my little sister, I've had him before my sister was born so when she asks, Yes I prefer him and would sell her before him!!
My older mare is in foal- it was either sell her or put her in foal so I went for the expensive option!! My boy, although I've been offered big money for him will prob not be going anywhere, he's too difficult and quirky and has had a bad start so I'd feel very protective of him and if I did ever sell him it would have to be a VERY special home. My new mare I brought with the intention of bringing on and selling so will see next year if she's still here, my sister already wants her for herself!!
I've only sold 2, one was a pony who I saw when I went to look at a horse and I bought him instead because I couldn't leave him in the state that was in and he's now gone to a really nice home where he'll be for life and the other was my sisters lead rein welsh pony and we were waiting for right home to come a long, we turned a few people down because we did'nt like them!!! My farrier now has her so we get regular updates on her. I think because I keep them at home and can afford to keep them I do and I also get so attached to them because I live with them, they really are more like pets than commodities!!

Hmm, well, my mare wil never be for sale, like someone said earlier she would have to be PTS if Icouldn't keep her, as no-one would want her really (she's not 100% sound, but not just an easy hack) plus she was so miserable before we got her, and has become so trusting now, but is still very wary around strangers etc, I couldn't risk selling her on. And my boy will never ever be for sale, if the awful happened and neither of them could be ridden, I'd have to just forgo the riding for a few years! Could never part with him. Would possibly put him out on loan if there was absolutely no other alternative, but am very posessive over him (only 5 people have ridden him, including me, in the 3.5 years I've had him!). So would probably be living in the lorry to save money before giving him to someone else! Luckiy my OH feels exactly the same about his horse so would never be forced to give them up!

Sparkles - no, never she's my "lifetime" horse

Bobbles - maybe but with his medical issues..probably not

Maxy - currently under offer and heading for your shores

Oscar - we'll see but no, probably not

Would sell every horse in my life apart from Bertha, I would find it hard parting with Oshk yes, and I would hang on to him as long as I could justify it, but I would sell him.

I am going to sell harry at the end of summer, because i have outgrown him.

I am planning on keeping tara for pretty much the rest of her life, when i go to uni we might put her in foal
grin.gif
yay mini Tara's

Nope I couldnt sell Gen. He has been with me from a few weeks old and hopefully we will grow old together and when he has finished competing we can poddle (he might be sensible by then) round the lanes together.

As for Millies foal-to-be (assuming this year its all ok) .... I shall see how it turns out. If its simply too much for me then I will sell it. If not .... who know.

If the price was right I would sell any of our horses except my sister's amazing pony Sparrow who is staying for life. I would find it incredibly difficult to part with any of my horses but I have to be realistic and unfortunately money would have to rule over my heart.

Unfortunately, I have to sell when the horses and ponies have done their duty and I think they have had enough, or they become bored/stressed etc.

But, Phantom is here for life as is Magic, can't part with her she is a diamond pony, and Phantom is my daughters and even if she outgrows him, he goes nowhere.
The others though, have to have a hard heart
