Is it OK to wash the bottom part of the tail, this time of year? Not too cold? I need to clean Toby's tail (and legs) as they are disgusting and although I can brush out most of the dried mud, the colour of his tail is a very mucky yellow!!!

I was going to wash it tomorrow, as the weather is meant to be nice, cut it shorter and then smoother it in baby oil. Also, if I plait it, does it matter how long the plait is left in for??

I washed my mares last night because she is having a random season and STUNK! left her rug on and made sure she was warm!

Plait is fine i usually plait it for most of the winter, as long as it starts after the dock.

I will wash the whole of my mares tail and legs all through winter

Unless I use warm water I only ever wash below the dock, if I accidentally get cold water on her dock she buckles at the knees and tucks her bum under. I towel dry the tail the best I can and the plait the bottom half in an attempt to keep it clean.
