Following on from earlier post. Too much too young? Opinions?

Is this too much at 3?

Now I know I know the answer. But it gets poo pooed at my yard.

But is this too much for a youngster to be doing at 3? And yes, a lot of you will know which 3 year old I'm talking about

Monday day off
Tues Lunge with side reins
Wed Lunge with side reins
Thurs Ride in school after lunging
Fri Lunge in side reins
Sat ride in school after lunging
Sun 15 min hack followed by 10 min in school?

What are the likely implications of this? Please be aware this little man is VERY close to my heart, but is no longer mine, so dont have any say in what he's doing.

ETA He's an anglo arab x type thingy??
 
It depends how physically and emotionally well developed he is at 3yrs old (how big is he? and how is he bred?) and it also depends how long each session is (if only a few mins then obviously not as serious as if substantially longer!). Personally I wouldn't work a youngster 6 days a week but if he seems happy in the routine and is not being pushed too hard then I think he will be fine.

Sadly he may be one of these horses who is advertised at 4/5yr old that has 'gone stale' or has been 'over faced' which always indicates to me that they were pushed too hard as babies. Is there no way you can say anything to current owner, incase it is just ignorance?

Thanks Pat. I just dont know what to do. He's knackered all the time, always laying down. I'm so angry at myself for selling him, but I had to. Couldn't keep him when OH and I split, but now I'm working, I could easily afford him.

It's not ignorance unfortuantely, it's arrogince. One of these people you never question.
 
Any chance she'd sell back to you if you could afford it?

It's a bummer when you sell; makes it much easier if they go away but being on the same yard doesn't help I imagine. I know if they move you don't see so much but sometimes when it's things you can't change, it's better 'out of sight, not quite out of mind'. Hugs to you and both of them too, I take it, he's not too big for hugs?!

She'd never sell even if I offered her top whack, I've been saving for another one, and even if I offered her all of it, she wouldn't sell.

Her old boy is about to be retired, hence the rushing Den's learning process.

He's NEVER to big for hugs Pat, although I think he'd say different!!

All I can suggest then is be patient; you never know what's around the next corner and she might run into trouble and need baling out; we can keep our fingers crossed for you!! Sorry, not much help am I!

It's just nice to have it confirmed that I'm thinking right. I get called a pamperer down the yard. They think Josie should be out in the filed and being ridden now too as she's sound, she only had surgery 5 weeks ago!!

Things aren't great for me down my yard, previous history, and I just get on with things.

Voicing my opinions seems to just creat trouble for me.

If I were you I'd tell this woman exactly what you think, how disappointed you are she's doing this to your old horse and your concerns. OK, she'll be narked and think you're a nosey cow, but when she goes away and thinks about it, she might just ease off a bit. After all, now he's her horse she's not likely to wreck him on purpose, she may just be over-enthusiastic.

I think it would be worth p!ssing her off, guilt can work wonders and she might take on board some of what you say.
 
Gosh thats a lot of lunging! WE are backing our 3 year old this summer and he might get worked for a few days in a row like this when we first get on him but once riding quietly and able to hack out I am not intending to lunge him again til next spring at the soonest!! The stress on his joints would be a concern for me as well as the mental overload....each to their own I guess. But it ,must be horrid for you to have to watch. Hope situation works out ok.

it depends on the lunging and riding.
if its a mature 3 year old and the lunging is light on big circles, then it could be fine.
eg mostly walk halt and small amounts of trot with loosely fitted side reins.....
 
Oh sweetie,. firstly HI!!!!

Secondly, are you still vaguely near where you used to be? I am now in a similar area and I'd love to FINALLY meet you and J & D, you could come and meet B&H too and maybe even Matilda, if she doesn't sell before the end of the month.

And thirdly, yes on the face of it, too much for a 3yo - too many circles, no matter the time spent! If it was long reining and gentle hacking, then that would be different all together!
