Because Tara gets very "I don't care" with her back legs

So I just had a jump in them, to make sure she is ok with having them on. I warmed her up without them, and jumped our course of 6 jumps (only about 3ft) without them on- she rapped two or three with her hind legs. Then mum put the boots on, and put the fences up to 3"3ft-3"6ft- she didn't touch a single pole, and nearly jumped me off over an oxer because she jumped it so big!

So mum put up one fence to 3"9ft (we don't jump that height very often!), and i jumped a smaller one first and came round to the big one and wow, she flew it, and didn't even touch it!

I am really pleased, who knows if the boots helped or not, but she definitely doesn't usually jump that cleanly, so you never know! Am off to weston lawns on sunday for the discovery, which we always come away from with 4 faults usually as she doesn't pick up behind, so will let you know how we get on

Ah thats good news. I hope your girl gives you some clear rounds at the weekend. Do make sure though that you put them on for the last 5 mins of warm up & take them off as soon as you leave the arena. Also dont practise at home too much with them on. Apart from losing some effect, they also 'can' encourage the horse to go a little on it's forehand, therefore fiinishing up with clean jumping behind but knocking the poles in front.

yeah, I know not to use them at home, but we thought we ought to try them before competing in them, incase she took a dislike to them and start kicking out (she is a fussy mare!).

Absolutely right to try them out at home. That is very wise, also take precautions when putting them on at a show. Many horses when they go to move off also kick back (bit like some do when a travel boot is put on) So keep her in a corner of the collecting ring, where no one can inadvertantly walk behind her should she move off unexpectedly. Several people have received a kick on such occasions. Not Good, & prevention is better than cure.
