I was just wondering how many of us would be prepared to kill an animal for the purposes of feeding ourselves?

I'm pretty sure if I had my own chickens etc that wouldnt be a problem, Im also sure if I was any good with a gun, rabbit, pigeon and deer also wouldnt be an issue, but Im not sure I could kill a pig or cow with my bare hands (obviously strangulation would be a tad difficult)! I would happily send them off to slaughter though.

How many of us would be veggies if meat didnt come in plastic from supermarkets?

I don't discriminate between the cute or the not so cute - I'll eat anything out of respect for the ugly animals.
I intend to have my own small-holding some time in the future so will have to face up to shipping them off to slaughter at some point. Won't be easy, but i'd rather know it has had a good life first.

Good question actually. I have been pondering this morning. Years ago I would have said no, infact up until I had to sell Tallagh a couple of years ago I would have gone to pieces at the thought. Anything to do with losing a pet or accidently killing a rabbit etc would have seen me a quivering wreck.
After the sale of Tallagh though, I changed. I became much harder. When it was time to let Royale go, although it was difficult, I think I handled it very well, even being able to stay with her, I was upset ofcourse I was, but I dealt with it.
Anyways sorry about my ramblings. What I was going to say was, yes, I think I probably could now. Watching them in Hells Kitchen last week - what a bunch of wuss's.

We produce our own lamb and mutton, we buy in piglets to grow on and eat, we kill (shoot) wild rabbits on the field and eat them or feed them to the cats. I don't have a problem with it because I know that all these animals have had a far better life than the animals that you find in the butchers or on the shelves in the supermarkets.

They are all killed on site to minimise stress and are butchered here as well.

I don't think I could unless I was literally starving to death. That is one of the reasons why I am vegetarian - my personal opinion is that you shouldn't eat it unless you are prepared to cope with the realities of killing it.

i could kill a chicken, quite happily!!!!

i too want top have a small holding eventually; i want to take in all the friesian bull dairy calves in the area, which would otherwise be shot at a day old, and raise them so that they will at least have some purpose to life, even if they will still go for beef. that said, i wont be eating my own!!!

I have killed and eaten cockerals, it does make me feel a bit queer, I couldnt eat my pet chickens. I think if you eat meat you should be aware of the whole process. I am an Environmentla Health Officer and as part my training I did 200 hours in an abbatoir, it was quite a small local one, the most stressfull part for the animals was the travelling. I will always buy free range home killed meat if possible out of respect fot the animal.

When you send a bullock or whatever for slaughter surely the best thing you can do for it is then make sure you cook it well and eat it?????

An ex of mine had a small holding and twice a year sent a bullock off to be slaughtered... and we got it back in bits about a week later, best beef I've ever had, and knowing it had a happy life etc meant eating it wasnt as bad as you would think!

Not sure I could kill the animal myself, but grew up sending lambs and calves off to market knowing they were destined for the food chain.

I also will be plucking and gutting pheasant and partridge very soon - I arrive home and find braces of them haning on our front door. Find them very tasty!

I think it should be part of the school ciriculum that they learn where their meat comes from. primary school take them to a farm..... secondary school take them to an intensive farm to show them its not good.... and by 18 I think they should of all visited an abitoir... no its not nice but, it would be an eye opener and hopefully people would give their meat slightly more respect!

On my mum's side of the family we have about 4 generations of butchers so I think it is kind of in me somewhere to kill to eat - doesn't mean I'd be happy about it though! Especially if it was cute & fluffy!

Well I'm going to be learning how to shoot this year, so yes I will be killing to eat. Well, if I can manage to hit it. However I am quite squeamish so not sure about gutting and preparing it!

We always buy local produce off a farm that slaughters it's animals on site. You can see how well they are reared.

perhaps, but i wouldnt be doing it so i could eat the meat, id be doing it because i know that those calves would not be given chance to have a life at all otherwise (and because bullocks are, after all, destined only for slaughter - even im not too sentimental to know i cant have 200 bullocks running happily in a field til theyre 15!)

I think I could, Im veggie but if I know the animals had a good life then I dont mind eating meat. Its the thought of all those battery hens etc... I just dont want to support stuff like that

It was part of mine, we had a working farm and we did Agriculture and Rural science O levels and had to work on the farm as "morning cleaning", those of us who wanted to, got to do pretty much everything to do with animal husbandry, including helping slaughter and lambing (both ends!) and those who didn't still knew what was going on, I have since kept animals for food and would much rather know where my food is from than get it in cling film from the supermarket - killing an animal for your own consumption is the perfect food chain and shouldn't get people in such a flap.

Poor chickens! Don't be so mean!!!!

We used to have some ex-battery hens and it took about a week before they dared come outside, poor things. When I used to get home after school I'd shout 'Chickens' across the paddock and they would come running over, flapping their wings so they could go faster!

I'd happily kill and prepare game to eat, I think I could shoot a cow/sheep - I might be a bit grossed out by the whole chopping it up part though! I don't really eat much meat though - I'd rather eat fish and I've been out fishing and gutted/cooked the fish a few times. Really enjoyed knowing where it had come from and how fresh it was.

LOL!! Well you know the way it goes......20 people will say the same as me, but I'm so much better to be picked on.....and off we go again on another controversial post where I may be serious or as I had so much fun with the previous one, I may wind them all up again and enjoy every minute of it. Not today though - too busy and on my way out to make some pennies.
