I am looking to move my two neddies quite soon to a private yard shall I say. The lady who owns the place I have know for years as I used to ride her horses when I was younger. Sadly 3 out of the 4 she had have passed away (it was about 15+ years ago I used to go there), she now only has one mare left who will be 30 this year.

My horse is quite happy where he is but the bitchiness, backstabbing and restrictions are all getting to much. My horse feels like a chore at the moment I go up before work to muck out and chuck out into a mud bath and am there 5 evenings a week to bring him in. I dont get to spend any quality time with them due to restricitons etc.

One of mine is an ISH the other is a shettie, now my ISH can be quite stressy but is getting better at noticing that he is not all alone he is with my shettie. But I am worried in moving that he will get too stressed and wont be happy there.

Another girl on my yard is thinking of moving with us but still not 100% and I would prefer if she moved too as our horses share a field.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice. I am looking forward to having a winter field with grass and to be able to go down when I want and do what I want how I want to without anyone complaining about it.

Thanks

no advice at all other than to enjoy your horses. if you're more relaxed, i think your big lad will be anyway. must admit riding in front of a clique of utter bitches is a trial to anyone!
i'd imagine the lady's horse will be happy to have some company too, sounds like a much better situation.

I think you should definitely go for it.

I used to keep my horse at a big yard run by an event rider and he hated it - he'd stress to come back in when turned out and stress to go out when he was in.

He napped like a barsteward and was generally awful to be around.

Moved him to a private yard nearly 3 years ago now and he's absolutely flourished. despite being 17 now, he looks fantastic and is so happy in himself.

You never know, your ISH might chill out in the same way if you are more chilled and the yard is smaller/less hectic.

I bought my boy from a large dealers yard, and kept him there for a year. There was something always going on as they were into hunting as well. Although my boy seemed ok, I was not!! I felt looked down on as I didn't hunt. I moved him to his current yard where there is only him, one other livery, and two oldies turned out. He and I love it. He is so settled, I'm settled and everything is great!! Go for it!!

I'd say go for it, I've gone from livery yards to sharing my best friends horse that is kept on her own land. We and the horses couldn't be happier :D it's quiet and just so nice not to be on a livery yard anymore.

I bet your boy will chill out in no time xx

I run a small yard from my home with only 8 horses. Whenever I have had a new stressy horse, the owners have always commented that they can't believe how relaxed the horse is since coming to me. I think sometimes big yards for stressy horses can make them worse, with all the comings and goings. I think you have made a wise choice in going to a small private yard. Like you said there won't be the back stabbing when there is only a couple of you and everything on our yard is done on a friends basis. If someone is ill or unable to come up, one of us will cover for them. Non-one takes the mickey and they know if their car breaks down etc., someone will always have brought their horse in. Good luck with the move. You may be plesantly surprised:)

Go for it, it sounds a much better situation than you are in now, we did it and now it's just our horses and a very dear friend on our yard and it's heaven!

No bitchyness, we come and go as we please, no one breathing down our necks and the horses settled straight away as it was quiet and peaceful and there was nothing for them to stress about other than the move and they soon forgot about that, oh and it was so lovely not to have all our stuff chewed by rats!!!! and no rat *****e all over our hay, the rats at the previous yard had even chewed the wiring on our trailer!!!! go for it!!!!

Definately go for it - nice things about having own field is you can do what you want when you want and no-one to critise. It's nice to share with someone you get on well with to help each other out and for the horses to keep each other company. I was in situation where shared field and I was doing it all and not enjoying as all I seemed to do what poo pick and never got time to ride (she was meant to be helping me) in end I asked her to leave - now share with another lady who is brilliant and a real support and I'm loving the horses again:D

Thanks everyone you are all making me feel better about moving them. Although im not on a big yard there are on 5/6 others there the whole thing of restrictions etc is getting me down and Im sure must be getting my horse down.
My ISH is stressy when by him self although he shares a field with my shettie he seems to forget the shettie is with him (maybe out of sight out of mind being so far down below him ha ha). In the new place they may get to bond better just the two of them in the field and the YO's old mare in the next field.

What are you waiting for????

Speaking as someone who moved away from a Yard bitchfest, to a professional setup - you got nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say - jump - now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

Yep I would wholeheartedly recommend the move. I made the same sort of move just over a year ago and have never looked back. My horse is completely different as many have said, so much calmer and my confidence has come back due to complete lack of bitchiness. My friend and I enjoy our horses, support each other and help each other out around the yard.

Don't waste any more time! Get moving!
