This is exactly what I mean. I am not trying to suggest that all horses are suitable novice rides - Taz was definitely very difficult and only really went well for me, not because I'm great but because he had major problems and only really trusted me. Anyone could ride him as he was a saint and would never do anything nasty, but I'd never have put a novice on him in an uncontrolled environment like out hacking. Obviously some horses require a quiet or experienced rider, or they can be unsafe - I understand this.

My query is really about people who seem to boast that "anyone else" who rode their horse would be in serious danger, not just that they're not a novice ride. It does seem like an egotistical thing to say.

Well, anyone that rode my TB mare...who wasn't competent MIGHT be in serious danger...as she will rear vertically if caught hard enough in her mouth. She doesn't do it with me...or other riders who are the same standard or better.
But she might with a novice...and I don't think I could risk it - I'd feel terrible if she did injure someone...

Shilasdair; your mare sounds the same as my old girl, but I don't think that was really what Spiral was meaning....after all there are not that many horses like our ones in the world.

S I completely agree with you. All horses should be treated as individuals, and certainly not all horses are suitable for all riders. I'm by no means trying to suggest that every horse should be tolerant of a novice rider, although I think it is a benefit if a horse is tolerant to mistakes or a less experienced rider without flipping its lid.

That debate is an entirely different topic though.

But as Tia and DrWeevil etc have pointed out, in the OP about this, a lot of people were claiming nobody else but themselves, irrespective of ability, could ride their horses. This is what I don't understand.
 
Have just re-read your post, Spiral. I was one of the people on the full livery ridden horse post thingie who said I'd attend the inquest if someone rode any of my horses.
But to clarify, I have two unbroken youngsters - 2yo and a 3yo as well as my somewhat sharp TB mare that I've been trying to explain about....

Yes I do understand about your situation S, but as far as I can tell, you were one of the only people on that thread with an understandable reason.

And as you have said on this thread, it is not that your mare cannot be ridden by anyone at all, just that she requires experienced and sensitive riders.

Ah, we're agreed then. I'm obviously very ill today, to be agreeing with so many people.
If horse owners say no-one can ride their horses as well as them, I'd be suspicious...as there is always someone better than you.....that seems to be insecurity coming out, rather than concerns for riders' safety.

Yes, she's been ridden by quite a few people...most of whom really like her...and she can be handled, lunged and long reined, bandaged, injected, clipped etc by any idiot as she has good manners...
She's by a stallion renowned for his 'quirkiness' which shows how influential genes can be....

I don't mind if someone rides my horse if they asked first or I offered,which I often do to certain folk as like to see how horse looks from ground and if taken to shows horse will not go loopy if someone else rides so not a bad thing imo.
BUT if someone rode my horse without clearing it with me (or family) would be livid.So not because I think better just the principle of it.
