Following on from other post...How many rugs do you actually NEED??

If my horse hadn't got injured, she would actually need:
1x fleece cooler
1x lightweight turnout
1x light/mediumweight turnout
1x mediumweight turnout
1x lightweight stable
1x mediumweight stable
1x heavyweight stable
and possibly her cooler sheet (it was rather useful).
Those were the ones I used most last year. So that's... eight. Half the amount I actually have for her.

1 x summer sheet
1 x fleece rug
1 x waterproof exercise rug
1 x thermatex for competitions
1 x thermatex exercise rug for competitions
1 x LW stable rug with detachable hood
1 x MW stable rug with detachable hood
1 x HW stable rug with detachable hood
1 x LW TO with detachable hood
1 x MW TO with detachable hood
1 x HW TO with detachable hood

Both mine have all those, plus more

i think u need a couple of each type with different weights or one of each type with underrugs to layer but really depends of the horse, whether its clipped and whether its turned out etc!

Well, despite having enough rugs to dress PF (and also Antifaz probably) for life, I've only used 3 rugs on her since I got here; a cotton sheet, a LW stable rug and a MW turnout rug. The TO rug only goes on when it's really, really, really cold... and even then not always!

In the UK I needed more as horses lived out and to give rugs time to dry when they got soaked.

If you have detachable necks then it cuts down the amount of rugs you need. I think 3 stable and 3 turnout would be the perfect amount, lw, mw, hw with detachable necks. Then 1 cooler/travel rug.

Hmmm, if I really believe that then why do I have 20odd rugs

Star has...
2 fleeces
1 MW stable rug
1 HW stable rug
1 LW turnout
1 MW turnout

I need to have a bit of a shopping spree because she has grown out of some of her rugs.

Looking at these responses I don't feel so bad now!
Min has:
1x Fleece
2x Summer T/outs (one is a bit tight!)
1x 70g T/O with detachable hood
1x LW (170g) T/O
1x MW (220g) high neck T/O
3x HW (340g, 400g & 450g) T/Os, one with hood (only meant to be 2 but ordered one, put it on and then saw a "must-have"!

1x MW Stable
1x HW Stable
1x LW Stable/ travel multi-purpose

And yes, I need them all!!!!

Well, last year my horses survived very nicely out 24/7 in MW NZ's. One per horse. But.........it was cold not wet, horses weren't clipped or working beyond light hacking.

In Wales when I had a fit, clipped horse and it rained a lot I had 5 NZ's of varying weights, a couple of stable blankets, a cooler or two, exercise sheets etc, etc, etc. Rug on, rug off, what a palaver! I was changing rugs for the sake of it, finally I came to my senses and he lived in a NZ and an old fashioned Whitney wool blanket when needed, oh and I would never be without my newmarket quarter sheet either, very useful bit of kit that.

Now my tackroom has NZ's, a couple of summer sheets, a couple of wool blankets and a cooler. That's it. I have come to the conclusion, and it's taken me a long, long time to reach it, that, for me, a mountain of blankets is really just not necessary.

I think what I need to pretty close to what I have...

2 T/O rugs, one lightweight, one heavy weight with hood

1 stable rug (medium weight) and an under rug for colder days

1 fleece cooler

1 fly rug with neck and belly strap (sweet itch

)

I only have about another 3 rugs on top of this so I'm not doing too badly.

Everyone at my yard always accuses me of having way too many rugs but reading this post I don't feel so bad! I have:

1x LW T/O rainsheet
1x MW T/O with detachable neck
Ix HW T/O with built in neck

2x fleeces (one is for "best")
1x L/W stable rug
1x HW stable rug
2x cotton sheets (I use these under the stable rugs to keep them clean)

2 exercise sheets - 1 waterproof equi fleece that was given to me and a waterproof jobby that I bought before the other one was donated.

See it doesn't seem that excessive!

Well, you actually NEED as many as you can possibly buy at every horsey sale you go to without your husband finding out!

None of these rugs will ever make it onto the back of your welsh cob who lives out all year round in well sheltered fields without being clipped, BUT - one day they WILL come in useful.............
