in riding horses other than your own?

I have absolutely no interest in riding any other horse than my own. Which is bad I know.

I will sit on other horses, but I have no interest in riding them.

OCCASIONALLY I may have a lesson on instructors schoolmaster, if I am trying to get things right, but I honestly do not want to sit on anything else. I sometines think I would like to ride schoolmasters or things with a huge ttalent..thats it.

I have no interest in sitting on horses I know I can ride for other people. In fact, it irritates me when people ask me to sit on a horse to 'see how well it goes'...or not- I tend to think, whats the point, its never going to go the same for you as it does for me (in both a positive and negative way!!!)

Is that bad?

Last time I sat on someones horse was when a friends horse was being a turd and she got off in a strop in the middle of a hack and refused to ride it.

Blinking thing was as good as gold with me (sods law)

I love riding other people's horses, I see it as being a test of my riding. I have learnt one HELL of a lot by spending the last 5-10 years riding as many different horses as possible, and as I work in a livery/competition/schooling/breaking yard I have access to a fair few! I also share a horse and ride a friend's occasionally although I can't actually ride my horse now anyway so I have to get my fix somehow

I also love having lessons on my boss's horses, they are a fab bunch and I learn loads

I'll ride anything. I still go to our local riding school occasionally for a private lesson or one on the lunge. I find I can focus on myself then rather than concentrating on getting the best from my horse. Also I find it rather comforting when I get on some thing else and it leans or is a bit piggy and I can compare to my nice light responsive uphill pony and think that I can't be that cr*p if I produced that from scratch!

I spent years going from horse to horse and schooling and riding everything from point to pointers to fat ponies to shires to 3 year olds off the track, through to PSG dressage horses and grade A showjumpers and everything that comes through dealing yards in between.

Its completely put me off!!!

I would love to have the opportunity to ride more horses but I only get the chance to ride Bodey or Mum’s pony Badger. When I kept my old pony Ella at a riding school I rode all sorts of ponies and horses and I do think it makes you a better all round rider. I do find you end up riding how your horse needs to be ridden, and sometimes this can hide your faults.

I do wonder how I would be riding something different now....

I love riding a variety of horses. Admittedly i do not own my own i have a 3 day share on a 14.2hh cob. He's amazing. He's really helping me improve my show-jumping and cross-country and now i compete on 2ft 6 courses (yes i know that's low to ya'll) It's also great because i'm teaching him to go on the bit and collect himself. I just came off a 13hh pony who was entirely different. He was very nappy and you really had to ride him and i'm pleased to brag that i think i turned him around quite nicely. I used to ride a 14.3hh cob and a 14hh arab who were both amazing jumpers and with them i'd happily jump 3ft. I've ridden a lot of other horses too. I think it's good to get on different horses because they all need to be ridden in very different styles.

I only like riding my own. I think it's an age thing with me because when I was younger I would ride anything and loved trying out friends horses. I also don't have the time! I have a 5 year old that needs riding all the time, my oldster who needs hacking out a few times a week and I've also a 2 year old who I like to handle and do a bit groundwork with. I wish someone would ride mine rather than me ride theirs!

I'm a novice rider and would quite like to start riding other horses (encouraged by my instructor). I have access to a few that I can try and I am sure it will improve both my technique and my confidence in my own abilities, not that I lack confidence, it is just that I always ride the same horse, so I have very little experience of others.

I like riding most horses, some I have no interest in riding at all. I got to ride the yard owners daughters new horse the other day, which I was chuffed to bits about as she is very protective over them and wont let anyone ride them.

But some horses I have rode and never will again they were that awful to ride.

I don't have my own, so in a way I think that fact makes me want to ride different horses anyway.
I ride my mums friends horse as their daughters are at uni. I really enjoy it as it's a challenge.

Yes I really enjoy it, I ride a lot of the RS horses for escorts/exercise when I am not riding my own. I love having different challenges

Yeh I love riding other horses. Im biased and think mine is the best though! Ive started riding a friends horses in RC SJ and she's so different to my gelding it gives me tonnes of confidence to try something different.

Yep, I have ridden hundreds and still enjoy it. It improves you as a rider and gives you different ideas of how to ride your own

There is a line I draw now, i wont get on anything that is likely to injure me as I have my own horse to compete and he is my priority

I love riding a wide variety of horses, thought I don't have my own so I guess that's part of it

Any ride I can get is a bonus and a learning curve

Actually, I have been put off too TBH. I am much more picky now about what I ride, and when I finally get a horse of my own that I can ride and compete I think I will stick to that. I just have to take any chance I get at the moment! Plus sometimes I get to ride interesting ones at work

I love to ride other people's horses, although of course I now don't have one of my own and I had less time when I did.

I see it as a challenge to my ability, to try and click with a horse and get to know their buttons as quickly as possible.

I also think it is really good experience for myself, to learn to ride as many different horses as possible. It makes me a better rider, and I enjoy the challenge and achievement of getting different horses going nicely.

When I ride other people's horses, its usually something that goes both ways. They'll be letting me ride, which is really kind, and I'll often be helping them out with exercise and stuff. So it would never irritate me being asked or invited to have a sit on somebody else's - I'd be honoured to be asked to be honest.

My only exception is that, although I enjoy a challenge, I wouldn't want to ride a horse on a regular basis that I didn't really enjoy riding - because riding should be a pleasure, not a chore.

I like riding different horses. I'd find it flattering if someone said I could sit on their horse when people can be so funny with their Nags.

I don't get the chance very often these days, but I do like to get on a different horse from time to time - even if its just to remind me how much I like my own.

Yep - love riding other horses and do, mostly through the winter. Hunters, and the eventers before they go back to their professional yards.

I'm a bit like Chocolate Log, I dont really yearn after riding other people's horses

It could be because I'm lucky enough that I've never really had to; the only time I've been horseless is the 6 months between Mickey dying and getting Ellie, and in that time I rode more horses than I have in all the rest of my life! I would never deny that it helped me a lot; I rode everything from a 14hh pony to a 16.3 Grade A mare, as well as backing a 3yr old who went on to do some rather wonderful things
smile.gif
The experience of riding a variety of horses can only be good, but I think my reticence in wanting to ride others now has more to do with the fact that I am totally content with where Ellie and I are - although I want to improve my riding on her, I dont want it enough that I have to ride other horses to do so! Argh, I dont think that makes sense, I think, TBH, I'm just very selfish and very close-minded. After all, nobody, not even my mum, rides Ellie apart from me.....

Becasue I worked with horses from when I was 12 - first at the local riding school, then at a livery yard at weekends (owned by a listed dressage judge who used to give me lessons on her PSG horses) and then in my gap year for six months solid, some at a yard in Germany, before I fell off a dealing horse I was going to buy and nearly broke my neck! The majority of my friends are horsey and a vast number of them work/own horses which I am fortunate (?!!) enough to have had access too.
When I was horseless for a year and a half after my accident I ended up riding things for favours for people (which I think is what put me off) such as ex racers, PTP horses in Cobham, Grade A's/B's at my friends SJ yard, Polo ponies and 3 year olds being ridden away for someone I know that owns young event horses. Thats aside from the horses that I have owned (total of 3 now!!) And loaned etc.

Its a shame for all that riding I had the accident which put me off riding anything other than I enjoy riding for life - so am now very weary of sitting on anything, I dont enjoy it and would rather concentrate my efforts on my own horse. I have no interest in sitting on anything else

unless I can see a benefit.

yeah I see that - i dont see the point in injuring yourself so you cant ride your own i guess.

I just enjoy having the odd lesson on someone elses horse - I had a lesson on James before I left the old yard and it really helped me with a few things I was stuck on....when I got back on Pollo it helped no end!

I think riding a variety of horses is a positive thing as it should develop your skill as a rider and also confidence in yourself (at least it has in my case)
