I read the straw post with interest, as I am moving my boy to a new yard in a couple of weeks where straw bedding is included in the cost of livery.

I haven't used straw for years, in fact never with my current horse, so should I be concerned that he might eat it with gusto and thus get colic? I'd never thought of it before, until reading the other post.

Anyone else had to "introduce" a straw bed???

Ask them what straw it is, if a softer straw like oat or barley I wouldnt worry too much, if its wheat straw you could just see if he eats some (a little he wont colic on) and if he does spray with something fowl tasting but not toxic just in case he still eats it (like cribox!) :)

Good advice, thanks. I'll speak to the YO tomorrow and find out. My boy has either had shavings or wood pellets since I got him, so it remains to be seen if he'll do well on straw. I'm hoping he does, as it'll save me sourcing my own bedding, but then again I certainly don't want him tucking in and colicking! :)
