I think it really does depend on the horse in question. Those who have had a bad start often begin to fail by late teens, others are still active and happy hackers well intot ehir twenties.. Prime selling age is probably between 8 years to 15 years ...
I wouldnt ever sell a horse because its like a member of the family and you dont sell them just cos they dont do well at school or get ill etc.......
The only case I think is justifiable is childrens pones they grow out of or horses under breaking age or just broken, after that they should have a home for life with their owner.
Sorry Im a bit of a fascist on this and I know its not always poss but it makes me angry when peeps sell a horse that has got injured even tho its still rideable but not at the level they want and say they cant afford to keep it (they really mean they want to buy another one and cant keep both!). That's desperately ungrateful to the poor horse who prob hurt itself doing stuff the owner wanted them to do!
If we all followed your logic we'd all have to breed our own horses if we wanted to ride. How can it be more wrong to sell a horse than it is to buy or own one?
Sometimes you buy a horse in good faith then your circumstances change or you find you just do not suit one another. I have sold horses in the past but have often taken a bit of aloss to secure them a good home.
A horse is happy aslong as it has feed/water/shelter etc etc. If someone buys a horse that cant compete to the level they require is it fair for them to keep the horse working at a level that is beyond them so that therefore neither the horse or rider is happy?
Riding is a relationship, if one person isnt happy its unlikely that the relationship will work well. Whats wrong with selling a horse onto someone more suitable for the horse!?!
I would def not be able to afford or do justice to more than one horse so if the time comes to sell my mare i would be quite happy to.
Also can horses really tell if one is grateful? Do they really care???
Horses get sold fact.
I think it depends on the horse. My mare is old and I know she wouldn't settle into a new home. Older horses need their home comforts.
It also depends on the horses competitive life and how high the milege is.
Also whilst on the subject can we all just remember the amersham horses and that other dealer that has just been in court and remember we have to be responsible and it is our duty as owners to make sure that our horses do not end up in these situations whatever their age. Older horses are a cheap option for a dealer.
