Thing is I have a 16.2hh tb, he came out off racing last summer so had a winter hol to enjoy himself and is just starting to come back into work, he's a med weight not a stick thin tb. I'm 5ft 9 and weigh 13stone and size 12/14.
Everybody says I'm fine but they don't know what I weigh.
Also my highland x heavy cob who's built like a bull isn't going to make any bigger than 14hh. Will I be ok to ride him. Was going to break him myself when the time comes.

I have a 14.3hh Welsh D & I'm 6ft, I look tall on him cos I'm all leg but he carries my weight with ease & I'm happy, he's happy, nobody else's opinion counts.

From what you've said, I'd say both could carry you with ease! Highlands are weight carriers & regardless of how small used to carry fully blown men for hours at a time & pull heavy carts, 13st is nothing to them!

Enjoy your horsies I say!!! :)

It's really hard to tell as all horses react differently, but if you try and build some correct muscle on the tb before you begin riding (lunging/long reining/groundwork) and pay the usual attention to saddle fit etc., then I don't personally think you will be too heavy.

Likewise with the pony, as long as he is physically mature (i.e. I would always back at 4, not 3) I think you will be fine :) Highlands and cobs, if well conformed, are both fairly adept at weight carrying, and 13 stone is far from excessive IMO!

Thanks guys, I wasn't planning on breaking my guy until he's 4 anyway but will not sell him as we are partners in crime iv never had such a bond with a pony and want to buy another foal to keep and grow a bond with again.
I do feel I'm to heavy for my tb though.

Oh goodness, you'll be fine, I weigh very marginally less than you, am 5'10" my old, old girl (Betty in my sig) was a 16hh TB (again not stick thin like yours) and carried me fine, my current old girl is just shy of 15.1hh cobx and she carried me fine too (also did an awful lot of low level endurance riding on my friends connemmara - he's only 14hh and did absolutely fine!)

Goodness gracious lady, I'm the exact same height and weight as you! You will NOT squish your TB. My TB is only 15.3 and she carries me fine. My TB was not ridden much in the winter either as I've been ill, weather, etc and to bring her back into showing condition for our first showing show last month, we started working on the easy stuff first (transitions, shapes around the school) so she could start working from behind again and get fit herself too and built that up for longer periods. It's all about conditioning slowly and working correctly and this applies to everyone no matter how much you weigh.

thatsmygirl, I can't lose weight either and it gets harder the older you get and having medical conditions doesn't help either!! LOL, it's not as if I sit around eating pies all day either (I wish)!! When I went to the doc for my last lot of blood tests, he said to keep doing what I'm doing so it looks like 13stone is the weight my body is happy with :)

I think Tb's are tougher than we give credit for. At work they carry up to 16stone (i think this is minus tack) and they are fine.
As i do with mine id recommend getting your horses back checked out at good intervals but really i wouldnt worry about it!
