Thank you to everyone who gave ideas as to what my strange piece of horse tack was.

Today I put it on my 16.2 ISH to try and bring some life to it. The strange object in question is the noseband. The cheekpieces / headpiece / browband / bit are from my english bridle.

From putting it on I think it would work like a Kineton / Worcester noseband but having put my finger under the metal nose part have to say I think it would be quite severe. Not to mention the fact I had to pull my girls eyelashes out from the sides as they were so close to her eyes.

(No comments on the headcollar around her neck please, I had hold of the other end of the rope and she was in an enclosed area and in the side on picture she was about to blow snot all over me hence the enlarged nostrils)

I think it's part of a racing bit combination called the Norton Citation Bit.

I've tried to post a pic...not sure if it'll work!!

On the Citation the strap goes up the front of the face and buckles to the head piece at the poll.

To me it looks as if it should go around the back of the jaw or the front is too short - headpiece of it sits too far forward.

Very unusual piece of gear.
