As other have said, time to get the vet in - sooner rather than later.

Have you taken her temperature?
 
Hi quick update, vet has been, she's pale but not too bad, has temperature and slight murmer on heart but that is a symptom of anaemia and malnourishment her heart rate was ok he was surprised it wasn't a lot faster teeth ok too. He said there have been a lot of similar cases
recently and many have been linked to small redworms so although there was nothing 2 weeks ago when wormed she is going on pancur for 5 days, he has also left me with bute and antibiotics. He is pretty sure that whatever is causing the rapid muscle loss is a result of the gut lining and if it's worms she will be in pain :( she's now on box rest so her intake and output can be strictly monitored and he doesnt want her to go colicky on the grass. He alsI wants her on probiotic as she is generally quite gassy... Lots of rumbles, and although normal for her, in this condition he wants to minimalise any discomfort for her. He is pretty sure it's not cushings but has not ruled out liver even though she's not jaundice. He took bloods and is going to look at them and ring me with results later today, he will also be able to clarify if there is a chance of cushings because of some 'pattern' in white blood cells. So Ben and ebony are on box rest, he's in to make sure she stays as calm as possible through this. so, no real answers as yet but he is hopeful that antibiotics worming and bute should really help her
 
Amymay throughout this thread I have said the vet is coming today there has been a rapid decline this week but worst the last couple of days although she was still eating and drinking, the vet was booked on Friday for today so not sure why the need to suggest I get vet 'sooner rather than later' when you quote me saying vet is half an hour away? Anyhow, just have to wait on bloods, at least there is no wait on the results.

No worries, thank u all for you best wishes, off to get probiotics in a bit all mess are on hold until I hear from vet this afternoon, honestly she's like a walking pharmacy!! Now worrying about the discussion I'm going to have to have with yo regarding paddock if it does turn out to be worms, it's religiously poo picked but after bens lg roundworms and this, well as I said if it is worms I don't want them going back on there for a looooong while! :(

I hope the bloods give you some answers and you can start helping her. I know it's the not knowing thats the worst. :( It sounds like you are doing all you can for her at the mo. She is very lucky to have such a caring owner. x

Bloods are back and nothing glaring a few are borderline levels but to be expected because of her bodys condition and the fact she's fighting something, vet suggests to go with the antibiotics, probiotic, box rest, bute and wormer and xxxxx hope and pray that there is some change for the good or at least no detorioration in next 48 hrs because if not the next assumption would be tumours and with the sudden and acute onset that would be unthinkable for me at this point! So please please please everyone fingers crossed over the next 48 hrs. :(
 
Have you tried Fast fibre by allen and paige? Great hay replacer and easy to digest, you soak it for 30 - 60 seconds ( i make a huge bucket and soak over night) and try adding fenugreek to it, you can et that from health food shops if your feed merchants dont stock it. Add tablespoon of that to each feed along with some garlic. The alfa a oil is amazing stuff! And if she stilll wont eat try some stud mix like saracens level grow not full of sugar but really tasty :) good luck and hope your dear mare picks up soon xx

Looks and sounds SO like a mare who came to me losing condition to eat my lush grass.

She lost the weight your mare has very quickly..in the same way...and it wasn't till I saw her poo in the field...and it started walking away..LOL!...that I realised it was worms!
She had been regularly wormed where she had come from.....but had built up an immunity to redworms! I would suggest you get a WEC done and dose for these nasty little buggers!!!
She picked up in no time at all...and is now eventing at the her new home...but regularly checked for redworm.

Yes this is why we are dosing with pancur, hoping that it is worms and the equest didn't touch them but may have aggravated the situation x

Lurcherlu yes she loves ff I stopped buying it because Ben wouldn't eat slop but got something similar at the farm shop today. but today she is grazing on her haylage a bit more so will see tonight I may pop some in for her
 
Thank you x does anyone know what the chances are that equest pramox could have failed to flush out small redworms? I thought it was pretty efficient!
 
It totally depends on how many of the little buggers are in there!
we did the mare here with two doses...14 days apart (I think)...we showed them no mercy!

Hi everyone :) well ebony had her first dose of pancur, bute and antibiotics yesterday, I gave her her last feed at 7 and then once she turned her nose up at the last bit added another scoop of alfalfa for over night x went home and had a couple of glasses of wine and sniffed and sobbed for the evening. This morning she hadnt touched her feed overnight but was a bit more perky and had demolished about 2 cakes of hay!! :D skipped her out, obviously no worms as yet but she must have been in pain and with the bute in her is able to eat better!!! Just popped more haylage in for her and she ate nearly all her breakfast... Bute and pancur flavoured lol! more munching of hay going on as we speak and going to downsize on lunch so she eats it all :D

resistance to wormers is a huge problem and if you have used the same wormer for a long time then the chances would be pretty high that it might have failed

also (i think) it depends if they are encysted as that makes them harder to remove
 
Yeah, we don't regularly use equest pramox but on new yard so don't know about what the old liveries used to use! Cheers amymay :)
On the flipping downside she has now just cut herself on a piece of metal on back of door! It seemed blunt but can only assume its that! 2 inch gash on the base of her neck
About a handspan above rug fastenings!! Grrr!!! Vets coming to stitch it as its really difficult to cover, although I've shammed a cover for now!!
 
Vets have been and gone... All sorted and have forwarded bloods to a bigger lab to check for elevated protein levels that would indicate migrating redworm. Hopefully will know for certain if that's the cause soon but she is certainly happier today :D
