Need some advice on what else to feed an old Rottie.

He has always been an outdoor dog since a pup and is now in his mid to late teens so doing fairly well, still jumps around like a spring chicken half the time. I have to say though he is looking really thin and i'm very concerned. He is not my dog but i look after him. I know he has been wormed recently and seems quite happy in himself, but is just looking very thin.

Currently he is having one big tin of meat every evening and i know this is not enough for him. The problem is that the more well known dog feeds go straight threw him and he ends up with the squits, which is not nice for him or for me cleaning up.

I was thinking along the lines of biscuits but not sure what to go for?

So the idea would be to give him some biscuits in the morning and then his tin of meat in the evening.

Please any advice will be grately appreciated, cheers x

I feed my rottie on complete food no meat.We went through a crappy stage with her to. Megabucks at the vets for tests to find out what the problem was and never did find anything definate. I changed her onto a hypoallergenic gluten free food and it really helped her. Could try introducing that in small amounts to start with and hopefully it won't upset his stomach to much. I would split his meat over two meals if he can tolerate the biscuits .
It would be worth getting the vet to give him a once over just to make sure there is no underlying problem. Diabetes is one that springs to mind.

Digger, thanks for your input.
I will speak to the owner of the dog about taking him to the vets but would want the owner with me if i do take him.
As for food, what make of feed are you giving your dog?

I don't know if it will make any difference but he is 'entire'.

Cheers x

If he is mid to late teens he is doing incredibly well. I would try him on a complete feed designed for older dogs, and split over 2 feeds morning and evening. There is very little good in tinned food, some of them are 80% water! Or if he really cannot tolerate complete feeds, frozen tripe is good for putting on weight. I would suggest a check over by the vet as first priority, the weight loss could be a sign of liver or kidney problems. Hope you manage to find something that suits him.

I had a look on the internet at different types of hypo-allergenic dog feeds.

I went and picked up a small bag of James Wellbeloved Lamb and Rice Kibble for seniors this evening.

He's had his normal tin tonight and i've cleaned up his yard, so will give him a little of the kibble in the morning and see how we go.

As for going to the vets i will have to wait as his owner is on holiday this week abroad, so will talk to the owner on their return. Fingers crossed he's ok with the kibble.

Thanks for your thoughts, i will keep you updated.

we have found the only thing that doesnt upset our rottie is working dog mix, anything else gives him the squirts, he too is on the lean side but the more we feed him the more he poops out, iv never known a dog to poo so much, if we take him out for walk he poos til its nothing but water!!!!
