Hey everyone,

my horse has a foot infection and I have been poulticing it since tuesday am and this morning it came out clean and have now put a dry poultice on just to be on the safe side. how long do people think I should carry on poulticing it for?.

Thanks

Once the poultice comes clean (normally 2 to 3 days after draining) you will need to dry the site of infection, a dry poultice or dressing should do this, after about 24 hours a thin skin of horn will form protecting the sensitive tissue from further infection. Topical treatments such as sugar and iodine or foot rot spay can be useful at this stage. You will then need to provide protection for the new horn growth, perhaps with a wide shoe or a pad, when fitted you should be able to return to normal work.
