my 6 year old gelding has started to kick himself with his hind legs as if trying to get his willy? he does not do it all the time only for short spurts, nothing has changed in his routine and he still eats , drinks, poos, etc and he will let me touch his belly and in towards his willy (but not too close)
at first i thought of colic but he is letting me touch and press him without any flinching, and he is'nt rolling round on the floor. he also does have his willy out quite a lot and it looks quite healthy so i am a little baffled as to what it wrong with him. i was wondering whether he could have just strained a muscle?
please help if you can.

Hello

I was interested to see your post as my friend's horse has just started to do something similar yesterday. Apparently he did it when she asked him to trot. At the moment she doesn't know why and the vet hasn't decided. She's keeping him stabled as a precaution to colic and taken him off his hard feed. he is only having small haynets at certain times as well.

no it can be random and not affect all horses grazing together. my sec a had this and he rubbed his back legs til they bled in a few days . dermoline lice shampoo sorted it for me.x

I don't know about the OP's horse but my friend's horse only does it with one of his hind legs like mad apparently (I haven't seen it) and only when asked to trot. There is no itching and otherwise he appears normal. I heard there was another on this yard where it did this and 3 days later it got really bad colic which is why my friend is following her vet's precautions.

i spent some time with him today and he did'nt do it at all. yes he is the feathered avatar of mine hehe. i want to ride tomorrow so we'll see how he is being tacked up and taken out.
thanks everyone.;)
