Hi I bought a horse on Friday who has been barefoot for a few months due to being out of work since the end of last year. I lunged him on the Saturday and noticed he was a little sore on one of his front feet. The farrier came out yesterday to trim and shoe him. His feet were quite bad and the farrier said he's walking on his soles as he's been barefoot for a while. Now that he has a full set of shoes on how long will it take for him to be sound and should I ride him or wait until he is completely sound? Thank you 😊

So was he lame when you bought him?
You need to wait until he's sound before riding him and I would suggest getting a bet out if he doesn't come sound in a couple of days.
Did you get him vetted?

Most barefoot horses don't walk on their walls... the wall is flush with the sole.
If he was lame on one side I wouldn't expect shoeing to resolve the issue unless it was a bruise that has now been elevated off the ground. Anything else you have likely just covered up an issue that may well arise again in time.

Ditto was he sound on purchase? vetted?
