Thought you might like to see an x-ray we had taken today of a 5 year old gelding who had a bit too much rough and tumble in the field resulting in a very broken jaw ...

Vets say it will be a couple of months before he can return to work but I would be interested to know if you have any experience of this.

He is eating grass and sloppy bucket feeds but cant eat haylage, so for the few hours a day he is in his stable, he has ad lib Hi Fi Light. He is starting to lose condition as he cant chew properly which will effect the amount of neutrients he absorbs so lots of small feeds and veg oil. Fingers crossed eh.

Ouch! PF found it very hard to chew alfalfa (picked off the leaves) when she broke her jaw, but managed fine with oats. Perhaps you could feed grass nuts; soaked, so they're mushy. Vets told me 2-3 months for PF, and it's been just over 2 months for her. Within a couple of weeks it was much easier for her to chew and I was lucky that she didn't lose any condition at all.

Paintbox - I bought him as a yearling (long story) and sold him to a girl on the yard as a 3 yo, he is a handsome 15hh ch IDx and has his teeth done annually by fab EDT.

Kezz - Vets say a couple of months before he can start work again, but will re x-ray in a months time to see how it is healing.

PF - gosh, sorry I must have missed your news! Grass nuts are a very good idea as these will help with the neutrient issue although we do have plenty of grass atm, will get a sack tomorrow. Hope PF is well on the mend now x

Naturally - No one saw it happen, but it makes sense that as he is a bit of a bruiser with his young pals in the field, it fits the bill. Vets think he was kicked by an unshod ned and his best play mate is a 3 year old gelding.

Having taken and read 10's of thousands of Xrays the white object on the top right of the film is the finger or thumb from a lead glove. I will leave it to the viewers' imagination as to whether it contains a hand!
