As a direct result of the enthusiasm resulting from the rescue of the poor little colt in Tipton by several Facebook people last weekend, a web forum has been set up to channel that enthusiasm and ensure that anyone finding an equine in desperate need stays within the law, but hopefully manages to help it. The authors are in Shropshire but it isn't limited to any one area.
The RSPCA should be doing this stuff but clearly aren't, so if you want to help, draw attention to horses in need, offer foster home, offer to do home checks, offer information or other sorts of help (such as legal or veterinary advice), please go to http://www.horse.webspaceunlimited.co.uk/index.php and register.
See you there!

OK, I've sat on my hands for a while, but I have to say it.

The lack of response is probably due to the number of very dodgy rescue threads on here recently.

In light of the people behind some of them, I wont be registering for anything which isn't run by a charity I recognise and respect.

Sorry

Good job you guys weren't about when the ILPH was founded... without someone taking a chance with an unknown group, it'd have never gotton off the ground and thousands of horses would have suffered!

I followed the link and it appears to have Welsh connections. Now I'm sure its not the same, but remember JamieandDexter.

Also nothing on the page about who the people are

I doubt if ILPH would have got very far with marketing like that

Well, yes, the ILPH did have the advantage that Internet Trolls were an impossibility.

However, whatever the motives behind the setting up of the website, as long as half of the people on it are genuine then they can get genuine help to genuine rescue cases and genuinely make a difference. If it works, the website itself will sort the wheat from the chaff.

Given that the ILPH was formed back when horses were machines made from flesh and blood, I imagine an awful lot of people thought they were the olden day equivalent of "trolls"... nutters who spout rubbish for attention... but it worked, didn't it!

I was around in Redwing's early days and the reputation wasn't great, which is perhaps why I am wary of less established "charities" particularly with the recent coverage of some extremely dubious "rescue" centres and appalling neglect from people who claim to be saving these poor animals. As I said, I'm sure this has been set up with the best of intentions and I wish them well, but I personally would prefer to support the two charities (Redwings & WHW) who I know to be dedicated and committed to the welfare of horses in their care, (this may also be because I have personal knowledge of both).

!

Actually I think that is even more dangerous for the horses than if everyone on it is dodgy.

If we all sign up and support it, it gives it some legitimacy. If it is dodgy, how long before people start offering good homes to free horses. Forum members think its OK and someones pet goes to the meat man or missing on loan.

We have seen it all before.

I know a lot of the people involved in this idea, and they're all a lovely horsey family up the road from me. Nothing dodgy about them :)

I think the general idea is to reach out to people who want to help but don't know where to start. They managed to kick the RSPCA + police into action and take the foal home with them on the same night rather than waiting 7 days for them to tick their boxes :) its a happy ending for the foal that they have named tiny tim. He's now doing very well, eating healthily and enjoying his time in the paddocks! Xx

LOL, it is a bit hazy but even I know Shropshire isn't in Wales :D

However I thought Powys was, the site covers both areas.

Powys - definitely yes...and is...next door to Shropshire! ;)

Both still really far away from Bridgend though!! (Especially considering the Black Mountains effectively divide North and South Wales)
:D

Was Jamie definitely outed as a troll then or is that just HHO surmise......??

Mmm a mountain range might be a problem :D

Jamie was apparently not Jamie and not even a guy. Lost track of everything really but I believe he was Teds Mum trolling, or looking for some free horses.

He/She/It fooled a lot of people on here, and the lady who was putting links to the government.

All I am saying it that it would be really easy for people like that to misuse a site like this. Even if the creators have the best intentions.

Done through a charity people could be checked out.

No way! :(
I missed all the bits where that came out...can't fathom why people do stuff like that...
I think it does all raise a lot of valid points about 'rescue' and that good intentions sometimes are just not enough...I followed your thread Rocky's mum about the pony that you helped rehome recently and it was clear from that just how much it takes to effectively rescue even one small pony...full respect for that.
Hope that this fledgling group can steer the tricky course between good intentions and genuine effective work which takes years of dedicated effort and many hands..

I personally think it is a disaster waiting to happen. There are far too many well meaning people out there that won't follow the guidelines and will inevitably do things their own way.
