New codes of practice for cats, equines (horses, ponies and donkeys) and dogs came in to force in April 2010. They provide advice on how to comply with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and they should be read by all those who own or care for these animals.
The codes, which where subject of public consultation and only apply in England, can be used in courts to help decide whether an offence has been commited.
Each code includes information on how owners and keepers can meet the welfare needs of their animals, including their need for a suitable environment, their diet, their ability to exhibit normal behaviour environment, which other animals they should be housed with or apart from, and how they can be protected from pain suffering, injury and disease.
