I have been searching for months for a horse now and have made every mistake in the book. To help me in my quest I bought a book about buying the right horse. Inside there was a poem which hits the nail on the head. I hope you find it as amusing as I did.

'A Horse A Horse' by R W F Poole

I want a horse.
A special horse, of course.
A horse of quality and speed,
strong of limb, or fiery breed,
whose ears will cock and nostrils crack
as he strives to catch the flying pack
with 18 stone on his back.

I know just the very horse for you, brown, or black or bay.
I had him in this very yard and sold him yesterday.

Put out the feelers
Ring up the dealers.
Drive 300 miles on a foggy day
to find the man has gone away
but he's left 'the Boy' who isn't 20 shillings in the pound,
the horse who's 15.3hh and quite unsound:
for this he wants three thousand pound?

Black despair, pull out hair.
I try a horse (amazing bold)
But 'mind, he takes a little hold'.
For half and hour he nearly, but not quite, runs away;
what a horse! What power! hooray! hooray!
then I have to get off and push for
the rest of the day.

No more smiles;
travelled miles;
seen horses coloured black to grey,
but none are EVER what they say.
I now know that 16.2 means 15.3 and 8 means a generous 12,
that's why it would be nice if just once someone
told me the truth before i drove miles to try it:
then I might buy it.

hehe, i love that... made me chuckle

FANTASTIC. This time round I've only viewed 3 so far. The first was lame, the 2nd not as described at all, the 3rd was WAY over priced and not quite what it said (nearly but the nearly knocked over £1000 off what they were asking)

However last time I travelled 100's of miles looking for a horse suitable for my nervous novice husband to learn on, well I got bolted with, reared on and bucked clean off!!

Next was looking for county standard or nearly county standard even, 16.1 mw hunter, most of them the conformation was awful or again lame!

He should have bought a Cleveland bay - quotes from stud book records.

"Carried 700 pounds 60 miles in 24 hours four times a week" "Mr. Maynard rode his cleveland from Highthorne to Newcastle, 40 miles and 40 miles back the same day, swimming the Tees at night."

There are two CB lovers who have endurance mares doing 80kms, both pure bred - and they will do that with a heavy rider.

Don't fancy night swimming though!!

So, so true!! Have forwarded it on to all my friends who've been horse shopping with me. I am considering buying a shop mobility scooter next and taking up knitting and Suduko instead. Far easier!!
