For anyone who has gone travelling - what did you do with your horse?

I have been offered the most fantastic opportunity to go and work abroad towards the end of the year. I would be working as a guide on horseback safari tours so really would be a dream job :D

Really think it's a once in a lifetime sort of offer and would obviously love to take it up, but not sure what to do with my horse. He's only 4 and was supposed to be a keeper - he's my ideal horse and I broke him myself so am very attached! I've had bad experiences before with loaning and particularly as he is so young I'm worried it could be detrimental to all the work I've done so far with him. Also I would only be away for 3 months so I doubt people would want to loan for such a short period. Would it be feasible to turn him away? Or better to try and keep him ticking over?

For all of you have been travelling, what did you do with your horse before you went away?

Thanks guys :)

I went to the states for 3 months a couple of years ago and had a couple of sharers for my horse. It worked out fairly well, a few hiccups between them over my horse which i couldnt do much about, something i found really frustrating. Over all they had fun, my horse was fine (i had someone keep an eye on her and step in if they found it necessary) but i would only do it again if i had the sharer inplace long before i went away.
As you horse is young and your going away over winter i would turn him away. If you know someone who will be able to keep and eye on him and make sure he is fed and happy i would go with that. 3 month really isnt a long time and he will be fine with the time off.
Sounds like a fab opportunity :)

Hahah its not in South Africa by any chance? :)

I would think take it..turn him away if necessary. I'd try find somebody to work him ideally, but at the end of the day 3 months is hardly any time and he'd be fine with the time off if you can't find anybody to keep him exercised.

Unlike me who has to find a 3 year solution

Vam - getting sharers was another option, and keeping him at current yard. He's not the easiest of horses to ride though and just had nightmares of him being completely ruined when I got back!

JustMe22 - it is SA, how could you tell? :p One of my friends has been working out there for a year so I know it's a great place! Ouch - 3 years would be a nightmare, where are you off too for that long?

I would leave said horse with my very old friend for free where you know he would be loved and looked after :D

Also, there is nothing schooling wont fix, you are a good enough rider to re-school him if anyone "ruins" him, but said old friend is likely to make sure that doesnt happen, as is new friend who you met through old friend :D

Hahah I could tell because I live in SA and where else does horseback safaris? :D I think I also saw the position advertised and considered it but then realised it was hugely impractical for me :) If you wanna know anything about the country in general, free free to PM me.
Oh, and the 3 years - to the UK for me. Ugh. Haha
