Pity poor poor me!
I love my job at a little racing yard. I dont muck out but do all the grooming washing off feeding and sort of loving of my babies ( the race horses!)
I have been presented with my very own work experience person who is just painful! I'm quiet but tbh with people not the most patient inside Altho I can keep my temper- I won't shout!!! This person is scared of horses doesn't like to work or get dirt ( ie a bit of hay or shavings) on their clothes, won't talk and god I tried! I love to faff round all morning with my ponies and my I pod and am struggling here with my silent hands in pockets shadow ;-(

Think I would be telling her to buck her ideas up! And if she doesn't simply request she stays out of the way. What on earth is she there for if she is frightened of horses? Really some people think racing is all glitz and glamour, and don't realise its mainly just hard work.

My thoughts exactly and really there's not a lot I can even ask to be done as they can be difficult. Not naughty but they are either very fit tb horses or a few on box rest who are bored!

McNally,

I feel your pain! I have had some right corkers working with me! How long is she meant to be there for?

Sometimes they really buck their idea up so give her a chance although it doesnt sound promising. She could be painfully shy? I find the majority of the ones that dont really want to be there dont make it to the end of the week anyway.

Can you find any little jobs she can do unsupervised to give yourself a break?

Tack cleaning or just washing bits if she is really hopeless, Washing feed buckets, rolling bandages filling haynets, sweeping or anything that needs a bit of organising?

PS your job sounds awesome I would love that sort of work. I dont mind a bit of mucking out but in the winter we have 50 in over night. I would love to be able to spend a bit of time grooming and loving the horses :)

Can you speak to the YO it seems pointless having someone doing work experience who is frightened of the horses and hates getting dirty, total waste of their time being on the yard, not to mention your time as well in having to oversea them.

Agree with the odd jobs! Those that show an interest at the vet practice I work at get shown loads, those that don't or keep disappearing for fag breaks get sent home or have to stamp paper bags or do other odd jobs for me until their parents can collect them. Gosh I sound harsh but its a busy dangerous environment and I'm not having them there if they can't be bothered.

I agree with Ella 19. Work experience people coming here who are interested and motivated get involved with all sorts of things like clipping, handling youngsters, course building or taught how to reverse trailers. People who obviously don't want to be here get to clean out all the water drinkers, scrub the plastic show jumps, put envelopes in alphabetical order, count dressage sheets, clean the office windows etc.
