Sad observation really, pointless post which I will undoubtedly be obliterated for, but just feeling very peeved about what I read last night.
So...it all started when I decide my boy would probably get alot out of having another 4 legged companion...a calming confidence giving friend of his own kind, & specifically I hoped for the same breed. So I started googling! I want to rescue rather than risk puppy farms & ads..don't want to fork out fortunes for an adult dog when there are so many in need and because he is very barky & reactive, the breeds I would consider buying from pup age (who I have found a very sensible lovely breeder who is everything you could possibly wish a breeder to be..its a rare breed (Hovawart) ad she is renowned in the breed for her devotion to them & keeping the breed healthy etc... BUT...I thought it would be quite a big thing to impose my barky lad on a puppy...and to impose a new scared little youngster on him...I would do the intros properly etc but it would simply be easier to have another young dog of atleast 6 months..so that its big enough an hopefully would be strong enough & not as scared as a new baby puppy. So thinking ahead, I thought I would suss out some rescues so they can home check etc in time for the after Christmas rush/or perhaps incase any ideal dog came in..the sort I would need would probably be relatively undamaged mentally & as near a stooge type as possible, but maybe the current owner is struggling financially or ill health etc ...not to mention those who will rehome due to the 'hassle' of having to find care over Christmas..
ANYWAY... I was incredibly saddened by what I found. I won't name names or breeds, but instead of the google page full of rescue centres keen to assist the needy among their chosen breed, I was faced with 2 possibly 3 genuine rescue results(which later proved to be one & the same under different site names).then nearly a page full of results that exposed a seemingly VERY nasty slanging match between two breed rescues and then some nice genuine sites for smaller rescues for the same breed struggling to make the front page.
My pointless point is simply how utterly dismayed I was..all this ridiculous bickering & trying to slate each other to be the best, many pages of posts of it, simply trying to out do the other..and really all its doing is harming the very special dogs in urgent need that we are all trying to help. I have had a good read thru and frankly it made very uncomfortable reading..I've really been put off and I'm sad to say that the very rescue that seemed to be in the thick of it actually had 5 dogs that potentially could have been ideal. I can't ignore what I've read,so will be looking to find my next rescue from a smaller scale breed rescue closer to home or from word of mouth..I feel in part, as bad as they are for their behaviour in not going to them,as ultimately its the dogs in their care that will pay the price. I know we can't save them all, but this made me really sad:-(
