Sad observation really, pointless post which I will undoubtedly be obliterated for, but just feeling very peeved about what I read last night.

So...it all started when I decide my boy would probably get alot out of having another 4 legged companion...a calming confidence giving friend of his own kind, & specifically I hoped for the same breed. So I started googling! I want to rescue rather than risk puppy farms & ads..don't want to fork out fortunes for an adult dog when there are so many in need and because he is very barky & reactive, the breeds I would consider buying from pup age (who I have found a very sensible lovely breeder who is everything you could possibly wish a breeder to be..its a rare breed (Hovawart) ad she is renowned in the breed for her devotion to them & keeping the breed healthy etc... BUT...I thought it would be quite a big thing to impose my barky lad on a puppy...and to impose a new scared little youngster on him...I would do the intros properly etc but it would simply be easier to have another young dog of atleast 6 months..so that its big enough an hopefully would be strong enough & not as scared as a new baby puppy. So thinking ahead, I thought I would suss out some rescues so they can home check etc in time for the after Christmas rush/or perhaps incase any ideal dog came in..the sort I would need would probably be relatively undamaged mentally & as near a stooge type as possible, but maybe the current owner is struggling financially or ill health etc ...not to mention those who will rehome due to the 'hassle' of having to find care over Christmas.. ANYWAY... I was incredibly saddened by what I found. I won't name names or breeds, but instead of the google page full of rescue centres keen to assist the needy among their chosen breed, I was faced with 2 possibly 3 genuine rescue results(which later proved to be one & the same under different site names).then nearly a page full of results that exposed a seemingly VERY nasty slanging match between two breed rescues and then some nice genuine sites for smaller rescues for the same breed struggling to make the front page.

My pointless point is simply how utterly dismayed I was..all this ridiculous bickering & trying to slate each other to be the best, many pages of posts of it, simply trying to out do the other..and really all its doing is harming the very special dogs in urgent need that we are all trying to help. I have had a good read thru and frankly it made very uncomfortable reading..I've really been put off and I'm sad to say that the very rescue that seemed to be in the thick of it actually had 5 dogs that potentially could have been ideal. I can't ignore what I've read,so will be looking to find my next rescue from a smaller scale breed rescue closer to home or from word of mouth..I feel in part, as bad as they are for their behaviour in not going to them,as ultimately its the dogs in their care that will pay the price. I know we can't save them all, but this made me really sad:-(

It doesn't matter if it is dog rescue, horse rescue, whatever, even dog or horse sports, us humans forget those fellas with the four legs and the pointy ears that it's supposed to be all about.

I actually removed myself from a most of the rescue FB pages I belonged to, because of the slanging matches and egomania displayed.

I noticed a cat hanging around the car park where i work,it looked bewildered/lost and came rushing to me when i went to it.
I rang a local Cats Protection(A) to see if they could help, they refused and gave me the number of another local C.P.(B) and then went on and on slagging them off. After getting short shrift from me i put the phone down and rang B who asked me where id got the number and i had to listen to another tirade as B slagged off A.I could not believe my ears!!Each other more interested in point scoring over the other and no regard for the cat.
I then spotted our local dog warden in the car park and she kindly took the cat and found its owner.

I agree some of the in fighting in rescues is so stupid. I got a load of abuse from a breed rescue for breeding a litter, despite the fact I had been volunteering for them for quite some time. I have recently been contacted by a couple of the more reasonable members of this particular rescue who have got fed up of the in fighting and started up another rescue, not ideal I agree in some ways but hopefully they will be more interested in the dogs than personalities. Not sure what breed you are looking for but suspect it may be GSD in which case l will try and point you in the right direction.

:D Nobody fired anything at me!:D:D:D

Seriously tho, thank you ladies, I'm glad I wasn't thinking too much unnecessarily, its madness isn't it..

Patterdalelass, I'm astounded, but not shocked - once had similar with a dog who found me, tho it was a sawn off springer..& sadly I found the owners:-( But made good friends & the dog still visits!:D Huge shame on my local DW for that tho..called me a YEAR later!!! Useless!

CC/MM (can't remember who deleted themselves) - I did too, it was just unbelievable..I wonder if I 'knew' either of you via fb!some of your words/styles seemed familiar when I first arrived here!

Also had my details passed to the ex excuse for an ex owner which I strictly expressed could not/should not/would never happen...apparently 'it' missed the dog..despite being copied in on the emails accidentally as having nothing to do with it only knowing of it! He did live with him & beat him/left him for 12 hrs a day etc, made him terrified of life & gave him post traumatic stress dissorder, and a billion other things..and was off on hols so was going to have him pts had i not taken him blindly, and lied thru his teeth to the assessors...but the rescue felt it was ok as he MISSED him..my God the guy is lucky he missed me aswell or he may not have lived to regret it!...am breathing again now...its safe everyone..you can stop hiding, I'm calm!honest!!

MM I shall pm you..:)

tho incase anyone is wondering/has something that needs rehoming,I would specifically like, if I'm not asking too much!:p a white gsd..ideally same/similar age or an older pup so I can imprint it & socialise it properly...if older, it is uber essential that he or she is good with other dogs...and by this, pleeeeeease...I mean has not attempted to / killed EVER, not just 'not recently' She/he will have to be a confidence giver to my dog who is brilliant once correctly introduced, but hugely reactive/fear not agression. I have no issue with separation anxiety types as I am always with my dog, work from home & am only ever at home or stables and if I'm not, simply because he has thumbs and can open even locked windows & front doors...if I ever can't be with him, I hijack my mother for babysitting duties. If he's not welcome somewhere, you won't find me there either & I'm sad & have no friends so never go out!:D:D:D (it may have something to do with them being scared of having their ears perforated but I have managed to hijack people from here & do have other friends come here instead!) I do obviously have horses/sheep/goats and would prefer the dog to have no known issues with these although they aren't ever loose together,or mine is on lead, it would just make life easier if I didn't have something doing impressions of a hedron collider every time I go to do my other 4 leggeds, which is pretty much 4-6 hours every day absolute minimum...not asking too much I hope!!:D

Funny you should say this (as a dog rescue) my mam recently paid for a cat to be neutered?? why? A lady took a cat in that was preganant, the cat had kittens and she contacted a CAT rescue for help in rehoming cat and kittens....they rocked up (TOOK KITTENS) and left the lady with the adult (1 yr old female) UN neutered (no advice) she said she could not keep the cat but did not want to let her back out because she was worried she would get pregnant again (very sensible) rescue did not care (took kittens) and vanished, she called for advice as mother cat was acting weird (she was just actually in season again) but lady had kept her in (we have now neutered) as lady could not afford but she is going to try and get the dog to accept and keep her, but the cat rescue should be ashamed, they should have at the very least neutered the female, but no, they wanted the easy rehome kittens and naff all else.

Dont forget the rescues who only want cute and fluffy, they dont want ugly or old, they should all be ashamed of themselves and not fit to call themselves a rescue.

Cayla those kittens were seen as a commodity imo and easy money, quite shocking.

ooh I could rant big time about one of the rescues that operates via FB, £800 out of pocket I am thanks to them and me being a mug grrr

The rescue I work with (cats and dogs) is often on the receiving end of slanging, for using 'gimmicks' to rehome , for example one friday the 13th, you could adopt a black cat for $13. We also keep our cat and dog play rooms open business hours, so anyone can come in off the street and play with the animals, which according to the other rescues makes us somehow deplorable

But, we manage to rehome a lot of animals (an event I organized this week found new homes for 7 cats, and 2 dogs in one day- even though it was a cat only event ) with a high success rate, and framework in place to help any owners/animals struggling to transition.

We treat every animal - yesterday we got an obese 1 year old, who will take an awful lot of time and effort to sort before rehoming, and we take a lot of older animals (12 year old right now, 10 year old dog) and we take animals that the other rescues turn away/pass on :confused:

You can't save them all, but we sure are trying here!

Edit: here is the twitter of one of our residents, gus. He is a long term resident - cranky cat - so we do our best to publicize him, whilst being honest about his... quirks. https://twitter.com/Gusthecrankycat
