whenever i go to a show i always tell the YO where, when and what I'm doing, and my results when i get home (she asks me this).
Is this the same on other yards- do you have to have notified in advance as to when you will be away or do you just turn up on the day and go?

Also if you were away for 2 or three or more nights would you expect to not have to pay livery for those days?

We don't have to tell our YM if we're going to a show, I hadn't heard of this before, although I've only been on 2 yards :o However I do always tell YM as she is lovely, loves Lacey and is always interested. On the old yard I would tell the YM, but that's because I used to compete one of her horses for her ;)

As for staying away I wouldn't expect to not pay for 3 days, after all most livery prices are per week/month so the odd day doesn't really matter.

If one of my horses is going to be off the yard I will tell the YO as a matter of courtesy - they don't need to know where I am going.
Yes I expect to pay during short absences, as the stable is being reserved for me and cannot be used for another horse.

well as my YO currently takes me to all my events she knows exactly where i'm going and when and how I get on ;)

Old yard though it was common courtesy to tell YO I was attending a show and where. this way if I hadn't returned she would know where to start looking, and in the same vein would know where the horse with rather than just see it missing from the field!

As fror livery charges, of course I would still pay even if away from yard. The only reduction in livery charges I would expect would be for anything you paid for individually on a PAYG basis for example mucking out/turning out etc if on a DIY basis as obviously you wouldn't need these done as you wouldn't be at the yard. If on full livery I would still pay the full livery charge even it away for several days unless away for say a week in which case I might discuss with YO a reduced rate for that rate to take in to account no mucking out etc!

hadnt thought of it that way, i see what you mean as the YO could have another horse in there as soon as you had left paying more than you would at that time, nice thinking

I tend to tell the YO i am going purely because i keep my trailer at the yard and would hope they would notice if it just vanished for the day. However this is often done with a note scribbled on her stable door or a quick text as i am hitching up. As she is horsey she often asks how i have done,if i had a good time if i see her afterwards purely cause she is friendly and interested. If i am away overnight then no i don't get a discount in livery nor in honesty would i expect to, however i am DIY so pay just for stable and grazing no care of my horse.

Would never dream of not paying livery if stabling away for 2-3 nights! As SC says, you don't do this with your mortgage when on holiday!

I tell my YO if I'm going to be away overnight or leaving super early/back super late so that she doesn't panic when head counting and thinks that Hopalong has escaped! ;)

i mean if you were away with your horse at a competition, you wouldnt be on the yard or using the bedding, feed ect, so would you still pay?

If you broke down how much you paid for food/stable rent/bedding/hay/grooms per day and then took off the amount for feed and hay (as i doubt you would need more shavings over a 2day period of being away) then it would probably work out around £5 off your bill, not really worth it!

I let mine know if i'm going to be late back or if I need to be on the yard very early so he gives me a key to get in and out the main gates. Would also let him know when i'm staying overnight anywhere so he doesn't think anybody's been nicked! I'm on DIY so pay for own bedding/forage as I need it. I wouldn't expect to get money taken off my stable/grass livery and i daresay I wouldn't get it even I did expect it  :p

I think it depends as most liveries will take hay/feed/bedding from the yard with them? you also still need to pay the rent on it so yes !"!

I do a price if a horse is in the vets though or away for a week and you only pay for stables x

No I wouldn't expect to get a reduction in livery if I were away at a show.
What I would do however, if I was on full/part livery, is take my horses feed/hay with me as it is technically paid for in the livery.

i tell my YO just because i get on with him and he's interested, and if i go away i still pay livery as i take all the bedding/hay/feed etc with me and if i came back early for whatever reason i'd want my stable to be there!

I only tell y/o if I intend to leave before 6am or get back after 9pm, as we have electric gates that lock in between these times. I would also tell them if we were away overnight for any reason as they do a 9pm late check and they would wonder where she was!
I would never expect to pay a reduced amount just for a couple of days! I sent my horse on a 2 week holiday and still paid for the full month

I would let YO know out of courtesy, although it's obvious if I've gone anywhere as the trailer is gone along with the horse and my Mum's car is in the car park!

I would expect to still pay though as you're "reserving" the stable for your usage even if you're away for a week or more

I tend to let the YO know what I'm up to just so she knows whats going on!

Re livery. Some interesting comments! I'm on part livery, so pay for 7 day care with no exercising. When I'm away at a 2 day show then I don't change the amount I pay as I generally take haylage, straw and feed with me. Normally more haylage than he would normally eat as not turned out, so that kind of balances the bill.

When he goes to my trainer for a week or two if I'm away with work or on hols I DO get my bill altered. I pay a retainer for my stable and that is it, which I think it totally reasonable as he is not there using bedding, eating feed or haylage and not being mucked out, turned out and groomed!! This has been the case on a couple of yards that I have been on. Would obviously be different if on DIY?!! :)

Always tell YO, she has lots going on and needs to know I'll be pulling my tailer out and loading up etc so that we don't end up in each others way.

Also she knows I've taken my horse out not that some random has turned up and nicked him or his trailer. Same when I take my tack home.

Livery still pay as I want my box kept and I use the yards feed/bedding as I'm on full livery.

There are only 2 of us on the yard so more like friends than livery and YO. She always asks where we are going, just out of interest, and also how we have got on. Yes I would expect to still pay for livery!

Yes, always tell my YM when and where we're going, and if I don't text her my results I'm in big trouble :D. We have a good support network at the yard. Anyone off competing is under the same orders!

I also tell her so she knows wagon/ned supposed to be missing, and as we're full livery, so she knows Mum will be feeding/turning out/putting to bed.

When we're away - I only pay for the bedding I use anyway and last time I was away I was immediately offered a reduction in full livery element of my bill but agreed instead my stable was emptied and disinfected so seemed like a bargain to me!

On the occasions that I've had to pull my horse out of the yard for overnight stays (or in my case, 2 x week long horspital stays) I let my YO know out of courtesy. If we're at shows and whatnot, she likes to know results but usually chat about it in passing rather than me texting her to know. Or she finds out on FB ;)

I do not expect a reduction in livery. I would not expect to get billed for hay I don't use (I'm on my own for bedding anyway). But I would agree that livery paid is to ensure that hte box is mine whether or not my horse is in the stable. I was horseless for a few months and in that time I still paid livery as all my stuff (rubber matts, tack etc) was still taking up space and my box was reserved for my exclusive use.
