What is your routine and how much sleep do you get? Am just being nosey really and am curious how other people cope. I have been given the option to move to working days (once moved can't move back to nights unless someone leaves) but feel that the time I have to spend with my horses would be dramatically reduced.

I work ten hour shifts (10pm - 8am) 4 nights a week (mon, wed, fri and sat). I have 3 ponies that are all in work, I ride and lead one from the youngster and work one separatley, so this saves me time and they are kept at home so this helps alot.

My routine :-
8.15 Get home and quick cupper and piece of toast.
8 35 Work all three ponies and muck out and get stables ready! (in at night, out during the day)
12.00 Go and sleep
4.30 Wake up, bring ponies in.
5.00 Eat
8.30 late night check.
9.30 Bed

When I do my back to back on a Fri to Sat I dont ride so am in bed by ten in morning.

I feel very lucky having read alot of posts on here about this sort of subject, I realise how much other people have to cope with and how little time some people have to spend with their horses. I am unsure whether I prefer having more time with my horses or whether i would prefer the thought of curling up in bed every night!! What are your thoughts and would you swop to days if you had the chance?

ETS I am on holiday hence why i am awake at this time of the day! lol

Hi what line of work are you in?

I work 37.5 hours per week and do a rotation of days and nights (best of both worlds). My shifts work out as 3 12 hour days per week and an extra 6 hour shift one week per month.

I have just the one horse. On nights i work 1900 - 07.30. My routine typically would be;

* leave work at 0730 . At 0800 arrive at the yard to feed/muck out (im not riding currently due to my pregnancy plus my horse is turned away at the moment. if i was riding/lungeing then i would do it in the morning

*0845 arrive back home for breakfast then straight to bed

*usually wake up between 1500 & 1600. get up, shower. go back to the yard around 1730 to bring in, rug up and feed.

*1800 usually sit down for a quick tea

*1830 leave for work!

have you done many nights before? is there a possibility of being able to 'trial out' some nights? as they can take some getting used to and they are not for everybody

Hope this helps :-)

I used to do nights but only 3. I worked 10 til 7am. I tried going to the stables straight from work but found I couldnt get enough sleep in order to be back for 4pm to bring in as my neighbours came home at 2.30pm and used to wake me up so I got my freind to turn out and I would go straight home from work, have a glass of wine!!!!, needed it to relax and sleep and hey it was really like my evening. I would then go to bed and try my best to sleep til 2pm, get up, eat, stables for 3.30pm, muck out, ride etc.
I found it really hard as just couldnt sleep in the day. I was up after about 4 hours which is fine for 3 days but couldnt have done many more.

ahh, i was in night mode myself! lol I am a staff nurse in an acute hospital.

uhm im not sure really! i dont really think it makes much difference in how much time i spend with my horse whether im on days or nights. Maybe thinking about it, when i work 12 hour days i will not ride or lunge as by the time i get home from work im too knackered from running around all day, and if i am on duty the next day all i want to do in the evenings is get horse settled for the night, shower and go to sleep lol. So horse would have those days off. whereas if i worked a set of nights i could at least do a quick lunge to keep him ticking over.

What hours do you work on days?
